Day 2 and permanently hangry!

Hi there,

36 year old male, 5’11 and 85kg, about 17%bf . Using Huel to sort out my diet, which took a bit of a downturn when I started a new job. I’m on day 2 and I am so hungry, I can barely concentrate. I’m having 9 scoops spread over 3 shakes throughout the day, and I’m still eating a proper dinner, since it’s lunch and breakfast where I always fall down.

I’m in a senior-level creative job, but I can barely do my job. I’m grumpy, really hungry and weak. By my calculations I’m taking in the right amount of cals for a minor deficit, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Will things improve? I’ve just inhaled three bananas to tide me over till the next drink because I was getting tetchy with colleague.

My suggestion would be to build up slowly. Start with just replacing one meal, then after a few days say 5, go up to two meals, then after say two weeks go up again if desired. Your body will need a little time to adjust.

Also some people have a fast metabolism. Probable if you are not overweight but would normally eat quite a lot of junk.

In that case, you are just an inefficient human being (sorry), you will need to eat more calories. Provided your weight stays put then you are probably eating the right amount.

If you’re used to eating a lot of junk and particularly sugars, you’re going to have some kind of withdrawal when you suddenly stop eating them. For me it lasted about 3 weeks (not on Huel, this was when I gave up junk food and transitioned over to real/whole foods) of feeling pretty nasty before I started to feel fine again and not miss the junk. You have to bear with it as you adjust. Don’t go super low calorie though, you need to keep your metabolism up.

Welcome to the world of going cold turkey from junk food. The hunger, headaches, dizziness, lethargy and nausea will pass.
