Sweeteners in protein powders/meal replacements

I couldn’t say, it’s just professional curiosity. However you can see from the adapatations to the US Vanilla and our use of stevia there that we’re looking at adapting formulas to suit the needs of our community!

Haha I hear you, but releasing some Huel branded cacao might p*** a few people off! We’re not looking to replace the products you can just buy in store.

I am trying right now a Huel, with 1 spoon huelchocolate, 1 New vainilla and 1 U/U

And its too damn sweet… arghh

I will try other day 0,5 vainilla 0,5 chocolate and 2 U/U

@Tim_Huel  no I wasn’t suggesting you sell bags of cacao !!!
I was suggesting to @airiartev to try UU plus cacao to get flavoured but not sweetened.
Although a premixed dark chocolate version of UU plus cacao powder would be brilliant - it’s no effort to mix it myself but it’s such a delicious combo it seems like an obvious premix flavour

Can’t we sample some US Vanilla @Tim_Huel ?? If you got a load in we could compare it and give you feedback on which we prefer

I too would be curious to try the stevia sweetened version.
I like the flavour boosts a lot.
But can’t stand the sucralose premixes.
UU plus flavour boosts are definitely my preference - I find this combo less sweet and more natural tasting. Some people find stevia overly sweet or bitter though.
It’s interesting.

I dont buy the flavours because of the maltodextrine

@airiartev what’s your reason for not just buying only the unflavoured unsweetened huel then?
If you want to avoid sucralose and stevia and maltodextrin, then just add cacao, or coffee powder or peanut butter powder: then you have flavour but no sweetener.
Have you tried this?

Right now is what i mostly eat. 2 spoons of UU + 1 of chocolate or vainilla.

But today I tried 1 uu + 1 vaini + 1 choco and was pretty bad, too sweet.

edit: Fun fact, Huel choco has less sugar than Vainilla, despite the sucralose seems the same

The amount of flavour boost is like 2g per 100g of powder (from memory) so the actual amount of maltodextrine being consumed is tiny.

Yeap again they make a big thing of the Abou-Donia et al. (2008) paper it’s still unclear what the effect is in humans.

The second point about safety concerns isn’t that clear as and they ignore several human studies. I think this is a better review of the safety concerns of artificial sweeteners: https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.k4718

The rats were given the maximum dose (in some studies not all) based on body weight e.g. 5mg/kg so the weight difference shouldn’t matter.

All those suggestions have issues which sucralose does not. They have negative effects on our teeth, are not suitable for diabetics because of the rise in blood glucose, contribute calories and carbohydrates so would alter the nutrient profile of Huel.

The US powders still contain some sucralose because stevia on its own imparts a bitter taste at the sweetness required.

I agree those are indeed concerns, but if someone does feel strongly about artificial sweeteners, they could always mix it with something more sweet themselves, that’s just what I meant to say. I think mixing it with milk or plant based milks also adds some sweetnes (but also alters the nutritional profile), as they also contain natural sugars (like lactose).

2 questions, sorry if you have already answered:

  1. is there a stevia based huel original and or do you plan to create one? (stevia instead of sucralose)
  2. do you plan to offer the choice to lower the sweeteners amount in huel powder? I personnaly find all huel powders too sweet in taste. 50% less sweeteners would be perfect for me. I have tried to mix UU with Original but the taste of UU is so strong it almost anihilates the original taste

Just to give you an idea, i have partially switched to plenny shake (jimmy joy) active powder because it is much less sweet in taste. I find it perfect on that point.

No it’s okay they’re great questions.

There isn’t currently in the UK/EU because stevia imparts too much bitterness at the levels required. We are always reformulating and improving Huel so watch this space.

That’s an interesting one. Taste is subjective but I get where you are coming from. How much UU do you mix with original? I do 2 scoops of UU and 1 of original and it’s like a slightly sweet porridge.

Ok for stevia

About mixing UU and original… Well… I have tried:
2 UU : 1 original = i hate it (i hate the UU taste, i don’t manage to swallow it)
1:1 : it has a very high taste of UU, too much for me
1:2 : same. It’s incredible how UU takes the advantage on the original
And other ratios are useless

That’s why I have bought big bags of Plenny Shake active. It is much much less sweet, flavors are very light. It’s even hard to distinguish vanilia from banana at first taste

I like Huel original’s taste and for breakfast for example, the amount of sweeteners is perfect to me, but at noon, i really want something much less sweet. This is where i eat plenny shake active but if there were a huel orginal with 50% less sweeteners i would eat that last one

Today i’m gonna try to mix PS Active with Huel original. It may be a win.

Okay, I understand.

As mentioned we are continuously reformulating and improving our products so hopefully future versions suit you more.

Hello Daniel, I have a question that maybe you could answer here. I have found that Huel is not high on calories, only 150 per 100 gr is ok but definitely not high and I would like to have a Huel meal of 700kcal but in the same format.

Why Huel has just 150 when for maximum efficiency it could be a little more calorie dense?

Thanks in advance

Probably it has something to do with the nutrient split?

Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean.

There are 400kcal per 100g of Huel Powder: https://uk.huel.com/pages/the-huel-powder-formula-explained

Sorry… Facepalm… I misread the numbers… 400kcal is pretty good.

Anyway, is there any plan to increase that number?

If it’s pretty good, why does it need to be increased?
