Huel can you please you add the methylated version of the B vitamins in your black edition powders? Alot of us have the MTHFR gene, so we can’t process B12 cyanocobalamin.
Apparently cyanocobalamin is more easily absorbed by the majority of people and methyl didn’t provide enough B12 when they used it originally. That’s my take on it, by maybe @Amy_Huel can give you a more rounded answer (when she is out of the cafe).
Hello Young_Greek, welcome to the Huel forum
We’re pleased to be able to use methylfolate in most of our products, however methylcobalamin works slightly differently. As it’s not very shelf-stable, we wouldn’t be able to add methylcobalamin to Huel in accordance with EU law. It’s very likely that vitamin B12 in this form would not be retained to the point of consumption, making our nutritional labels inaccurate. As a vegan product, we want to ensure our products contain a good dose of vitamin B12, and cyanocobalamin allows us to do this. As hunzas has also pointed out, it’s also reported that cyanocobalamin is absorbed more readily than methylcobalamin.
I completely appreciate that as someone with the MTHFR mutation, it may be more difficult for your body to convert cyanocobalamin to a functional form of B12. In this case, I would suggest looking at the rest of your B12 intake, and consider a methylcobalamin supplement if your intake is low/predominantly cyanocobalamin. Before starting a new supplement, we’d always recommend chatting to your doctor to help you assess the best option.
