Hey guys, just looking into this product and must say I am definitely going to give it a try as macro counting etc. Will be much easier, as well as this full spread of vitamins etc. Is something I really want to make sure I get. My main question is as I am aiming to preserve muscle while cutting fat, huel while higher in protein than other products is still lower than the bodybuilding norm, 1g of protein/ lb of body weight. And the carbs and fats ratios are a little off for cutting, has anyone “topped up” the huel mixes with something like liquid egg whites to increase the protein levels in the shakes and using maybe 3 huel meals and one normal meal? Is there any talk of creating a high protein low carb version? I’m around 200lb which would amount to 200g protein, 240g carbs and 40g of fats for reference.
200g protein is too much.
Where did you get “1g of protein / lb of body weight?”
The academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports that bodybuilders require 1.4 to 1.7 grams of protein per kilogram, or about 0.63 to 0.77 grams of protein per pound of body weight each day and that 1.4 to 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram is required to build muscle mass.
Cheers for the reply, it’s something that has been constantly reenforced through all the reading I have done over the years. I mean I’m not reading journals etc as its not my field of work just a hobby. But I’ve heard the same figure from both sources I trust and every other post, thread, book or blog I’ve read through. So would that be enough to prevent the body becoming catabolic while in a calorie deficit?
Ok so I have just been away and actually looked at this topic properly and you are right the research suggests an amount more like 0.73g/ lb which would put huel right there. So apologies for applying myth as if it were knowledge, and thanks for the help cheers Ric
Hi Aza. I am a Crossfitter and am concerned about muscle loss whilst on the lower protein diet provided by Huel. I have been topping up each shake with 25g unflavoured whey protein, yes I know it is no longer vegan but it mixes well and doesn’t affect the taste. I have lost a lot of weight quickly doing this and seen only minimal impact upon my strength but a massive improvement in my gas tank! Hope this helps
The ‘bodybuilding norm’ for protein is exaggerated. Good nutrition, good weigth training and cardio exercise in a structured format will reap fat loss and muscle maintenance. Yes, you should lean your diet to higher protein, but Huel is more than sufficient for that.
Yes to be honest once I’ve re-worked out the macros while accounting for the lower amount of protein, ~0.7g/ lb, huel is right on the mark. I’ve read before that cutting macros into deficit equally, with minimum amount of protein maintained, is better than a “low carb” diet per se. So I think i will use 1500 calories from huel and tweak the last figures with an evening meal to get what I need.
Remember if you’re trying to cut, cardio is also key
