H&S Prep Advice

Hi.

I’m having difficulty preparing H&S packs, particularly the pasta flavours. They just won’t cook. I’ve tried adding more water, leaving them longer and every time I end up with a consistency more watery than I would like yet the pasta is still crunchy.

Do you have any tips? I realise I’m essentially asking for advice on how to boil and pour water but this is what it’s come to.

Thank you.

Ow dang, this isn’t good at all.

So one of the things I always suggest and it sounds super ridiculous when I say it but are you string this mid way through the cook time? I only say this as sometimes in the past I’ve known people end up with crunchy pieces on the top and soft on the bottom when they don’t stir it so this could be something to consider if you’re not doing it already!

Also I would be curious to know are you using the pot or are you using the old bowl and cover format etc? Just to help build a little more of a picture so I can help :slight_smile:

I’ve been doing bowl and cover, coming back every 2-3 mins to stir, up to around 15 minutes.

One thing I thought to try but haven’t yet, is cooking it on the hob like normal pasta, add the pack to boiling water then simmer and stir. I only eat it at home so don’t mind the prep being a bit less convenient if the end result is better.

So on the hob isn’t one I’ve done before but might be worth trying it if you can find a way for it to work for you.

I’m still puzzled as to why you have crunchy pasta as it sounds like you’re literally doing the exact same thing I do.

Just wanted to jump in, I’ve only ever prepared it on the hob and I find it cooks fantastically :slight_smile:

Oh damn, interesting!

Thank you for jumping in :fire:

I always make hot meals in a thermos flask

  1. You can leave for 5, 10, 15 mins (sir after 5) and cooking all the while because nice and hot;
  2. No microplastics from official pot!!
  3. if you get distracted and come back after an hour, dinner is still fine!
  4. You can screw the lid on tight and take to eat at a destination;
  5. First time around I measured fill level in thermos using hurl pot and figured it’s about my little finger’s length from top, so that’s how I fill it now.

yeah, in general a bit more than the recommended time seems to work well

Yep. I always make mine in a thermos too. Foolproof.

Another point is that whilst plastic pot might work in a warm house, if you’re in a cold garage, unheated workshop, camping or a windy terrace, it won’t. Cools off too quick. Thermos gives consistent results.
