Hi everyone! I’m new here and I want to talk about Huel and ultra processed foods (UPF).
I watched an interview with Chris van Tulleken, who did an experiment for a BBC show. He ate only UPF for one month and a whole food diet for another month.
This made me wonder: Is Huel a UPF? Does it have the same bad effects on our health as other UPF? Or is it different because it’s nutritionally complete and balanced?
I’m aware this has been discussed before, but in light of Chris’ book ‘Ultra Processed People’ and the resulting articles and discussion surrounding it, so I thought I’d reopen.
Huel Powder is a nutritionally complete powdered food that has a balanced macro split and all 27 essential vitamins and minerals. It also says that Huel is not made to increase consumption or cravings, unlike most UPF that are very moreish and addictive.
But Huel also has some ingredients that are common in UPF, such as xanthan gum, sucralose, and sunflower lecithin. These ingredients are used out of necessity, but they may also have some problems. For example, xanthan gum may cause stomach issues, sucralose may change the gut bacteria, and sunflower lecithin may have pesticides.
On the other hand, Huel also has some ingredients that are good for gut health, such as bacillus coagulans and kombucha powder. These ingredients are probiotics that can help the gut and the immune system. How does Huel weigh up? Are there any experts on UPF hanging around here?
So, what do we think? Is Huel a UPF or not? And if it is, does it matter? I think it’s not so simple. Huel may have some features of UPF, but it also has some benefits over other UPF. It may not be as natural as whole foods, but it may not be as bad as junk foods, and I guess if you avoid worse foods then you’ll still benefit.
This is just my opinion based on what I know so far. I’m not an expert on nutrition or health, and I haven’t read Chris van Tulleken’s book ‘Ultra Processed People’ yet. I want to hear your opinions on this topic.
Do you think Huel should make a formula without the worst known offenders of UPF?
Thanks for making it this far! It’s my first post so please go easy on me. Keen to hear your thoughts.
tl;dr:
How bad is Huel as an ultra-processed food (UPF). Huel has some ingredients common in UPF, like xanthan gum, sucralose, and sunflower lecithin, but it also has probiotics and plant-based protein, which could be good for us. Huel might have some UPF features but it also has benefits over other UPF. Should Huel try to replace the worst ingredients?
