Awful Reflux/Heartburn

Yeah there was a doctor in Australia who was raising people’s acid levels (might be in those articles linked, sorry if so, I’m in a rush) and while it sounds counter intuitive it can actually work.

Long before Huel was even invented I suffered from bad GORD (GERD if you’re a merkin) and tried everything, raising pillows, avoiding various foods etc. It was only after I read about that guy I got any relief and that, mad as it sounds, worked a treat.

Thanks to Huel I have discovered that I have low stomach acid, and this may be part of why I’ve had acne most of my life. I possibly have low vitamin b12 too, because of low Intrinsic Factor that’s also associated with low stomach acid.

I was getting reflux, and what felt like a swollen thyroid (because of muscle tension), and occasionally a burning esophagus from the reflux. The reflux didn’t feel / taste acidic which I thought was odd.

I started taking probiotics / digestive enzymes / glass of diluted apple cider vinegar / betaine HCL with pepsin, all the above before meals, and now I’m doing better.

It might help to avoid things that will relax your esophagea sphincter like chocolate, mint, oils, coffee, etc.

Sucks that I can’t have Huel though. Perhaps adding some bitter taste to the mixture (like apple cider vinegar) would help signal your stomach to digest it faster. Mixing in some enzymes for the protein and fat might help as well. After what I’ve been through I’m not sure I’m willing to chance it though.

Just saying the reflux I get or got used to be because of a physical valve problem. So had nothing to do with huel, it was there before. My solution was, do not eat around 3 hours before lying down. At other times (beer?) A small glass of water with a small amount of bi-carb did the trick.
(Personally, I was taking other antacids by the bucket load all the time, but when moved to small glass of bi-carb the problem slowly went.
(In not a doctor! Etc)

Hello. I am new to Huel. I ordered my first subscription today. I take omeprazole - will this be a problem? Thanks.

I’ll also add that Huel causes heartburn for me, especially if I have several Huel shakes in a row (like two 400kcal meals separated by 4 hours) or if I haven’t had Huel for a few days. So I space out my Huel shakes by having a different brand’s shake in between Huel shakes.

As far as I know, I’m not allergic to anything and I have no idea what might cause this.
