Hi, Im new to Huel and was after a bit of advice from anyone who has been using Huel daily.
I am using Huel once a day at the moment as a meal replacement for lunch, but have noticed the past 3 days I have been using Huel, im struggling to consume more than 1400 calories per day.
I am using Huel as a way to lose weight as Im larger male, but just worried that 1400 calories per day isnt enough.
Im also exercising every other day for 45 min to 1 hour.
Is 1400 calories ok or do i need to try and introduce more calories?
Im eating clean for my other meals, such as porridge for breakfast, huel for lunch and chicken with rice for evening meal and do feel full.
When I read online for my size its telling me i shouldnt be eating any less than 1800 calories, but I dont feel the need to eat anymore as i will just be eating for the sake of it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hey Mike, welcome to the Huel forum
Without your personal details and activity levels, I can’t say for sure, but 1400 calories does feel like a very low calorie intake. As it sounds like you’ve already had a look into your body’s caloric needs, and 1800 was the lowest you should be aiming for, I would definitely suggest trying to meet this as a minimum.
It’s great that you’ve identified meal options that keep you feeling satisfied, and I appreciate it feels counter-intuitive to eat more when trying to lose weight, however sticking to such a low calorie intake may actually make weight loss more difficult down the line as your body adapts through a process called metabolic adaptation. You may have heard this referred to as ‘starvation mode’ (which is very much a misnomer), but the idea is generally the same - when we lose weight, we can see an unexplained decrease in metabolic rate that is sustained up to a year after the weight is lost, meaning keeping the weight off is more challenging.
To mitigate this, I would recommend incorporating resistance training into your exercise routine if you haven’t already to help build and maintain muscle mass as you lose body fat, and also aiming for at least 1800 calories, if not more. Around 500 calories less than your maintenance calories is a good place to aim for. If you’re struggling to hit this, I’d suggest sprinkling your day with small snacks to make it more manageable, or increasing the caloric value of your meals through the addition of healthy fats. For example, adding peanut butter to your porridge, or avocado and an oil-based dressing to your chicken and rice.
Thanks Amy
This has been very helpful and I’ll give it a go.
I have been losing weight, but as you have mentioned I want to do it properly so I’m not causing myself any issues.
I have actually changed my Huel today and mixed with Almond Milk instead of water to increase the calories slightly and will look at health snack options to get me to at least the 1800 calories per day.
Thanks again, your message is much appreciated
Kind Regards
Mike
