Exhausted after exercise classes, take Huel to see if will help

Also, saw one of your posts above referring to adrenal fatigue - high doses of vitamin C can do wonders for the adrenal system and clearing excess cortisol out of your body. CBT / DBT / Meditation / Mindfulness / other skill-learning based therapies can also teach you how to stop your body going into stress / panic mode and releasing so much cortisol which causes adrenal fatigue.
I also once took a supplement called “Dynamite Adrenal”, recommended by a nutritionist, which did wonders for me but I later found out it contained animal products and stopped taking it for that reason.

My suspicions (totally based on my own personal experience, not on science, but I do have some human biology / cellular biology knowledge) is that the anti-depressants have probably affected you. I find doctors completely dismiss any side effects that aren’t listed in their text book, but they really do not know everything about every drug, and how it affects every person.
Did you have any issues like this, prior to taking anti-depressants?

Anyway, regardless of the cause, its how you manage it thats the key.
Have you tried persisting with the exercise but in a very structured way - building up very slowly but with consistency? ie start off with just 5 (or even 2) minutes per day, and increase by a tiny amount every week until you get up to maybe 20 minutes per day, but then doing one day on, one day off. That’s just an example of what I mean - maybe a personal trainer with experience in this kind of chronic fatigue could help you set up a personal program. I guess I’m wondering whether you would be able to gradually build up your stamina if you were disciplined enough and consistent enough and had the correct program for you. It might not work, but may be worth trying, as opposed to doing a full-on zumba class a few times a week and being completely wiped out for the rest of the day, then being put off doing it again.

I’ve tried a qualified Ayrevedic doctor but in some ways contradicted other things so gave up. She advocated only eating when really hungry ( as adding food to food already being digested in stomach) yet I have no appetite in the morning until about 10 or 11 when I wake up at about 6.30 - this is when I have 3 scoops of Huel just to get something inside me 1 hour before the class . Likewise immediately after the class I’m not hungry, think its as not wound down from the exerise - I would be over 1/2 hour later though. I take my breakfast to the sports centre and have it about 1/2 hour later, having another scoop of huel too immediately after. I enjoy Huel and this is the reason I have it, just in the mornings. She couldn’t make sense of what I was experiencing although she was a lovely woman. Why do I have no appetite in the morning I ask myself when some people say they are hungry and animals are so this seems the natural way of being? Maybe I should forcing myself to eat more 1 hour before class which begins at 9ish, but not sure about this.

I can’t really apply the build up thing - staring with 5 minutes…I am bursting with energy in the mornings and feel good doing the exercise. It’s just the after effects which come on after an hour and get worse. Yes non recovery. Isn’t the build up thing for people with ME who haven’t been able to exercise at all as they get fatigued doing everyday things? And also people new to exercise - people always say to start easy and gradually build up and you will get stronger and fitter. But I have been exercising for years and its always stayed the same.

I think I must have been damaged somehow. Maybe adrenal fatigue. But the frustration with this is its not clear what to do about it.

Anyway will close now. Thanks a lot. I am going to read what you have sent me in detail later and also go through past posts.

Okay - sounds like youve worked really hard trying lots of things - good luck moving forwards.
Keep me posted on how you’re doing. Take care

Hi Christina

I rarely look on the Huel forum. If you give me your email address it would be easier to keep in touch. Could we do this without the addresses going on the Huel forum?

Continuing the discussion from Exhausted after exercise classes, take Huel to see if will help:

Sorry to chime in here but sounds like you have a mild form of fybromyalgia. My mum has it so I know all of its symptoms and some of those are extreme exhaustion, depression and aching for days after strenuous activity. Ps you don’t have to present all the symptoms and it can take years to be diagnosed by specialists. It took my mum 7 years before a doctor finally diagnosed her with it!

Good luck in your search and I hope it isn’t that. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have been taking Venlafaxine antidepressants for over 10 years and they make me feel exhausted. They also made me put on weight which doesn’t help. It’s hard going trying to go to the gym being so exhausted. But I have to say in the short time I was doing 100% Huel I did feel like I had more energy, not a great deal but a bit. I am going to try 100% again in the new year.

Thanks. It’s useful what you say. Just to re-iterate, not that you probably need me to - I don’t think depression has any connection. I am not depressed a all at the moment…I know that fibromyalgia can make people depressed though, and understandably but in my case, no connection I don’t think. When I say strenuous activity I just mean strenuous for me, a 3/4 hour aerobic class which makes me sweat, and the exhaustion starts to come on about an hour later and gets worse. also get upset stomach and wind with the exhaustion but if I don’t exerise I don’t get this at all.

Is this what your mum got when it was coming on? Thanks again. I am now going to look into fibromyalgia on line to see if it rings any bells

Thanks. It’s interesting what you say, Ian. The citalopram doesn’t make me exhausted, when I’m not taking them I feel just the same i.e. exhausted just after ‘strenuous for me’ activity.

About Huel, I have it in the morning as I have no appetite but think it just makes me want to eat more. I still feel hungry at about 10.30 - 11 whether I have the huel or not. So, well done to anyone who goes 100% huel but it doesn’t fill me up. Much like dieters who have those slimming products but eat ordinary food on top!

I think I have solved my exhausted after exercise thing. Well I’m just a bit tired after exercise now, not absolutely exhausted. I have 3 scoops 1 hour before the class starts - its only 3/4 hour anyway, and either cereal or even 2 more scoops at 10.15 . When I get home at about 10.45 I have proper breakfast of cereal and then I rest as I do feel a bit tired. Was advised by NHS dietiian to eat small meals every 3 hours and this seems to be working . By the way, so many people of my age do so much more exercise in gym or classes than me and don’t feel tired at all afterwards (its a while AFTER the exercise the tiredness comes on - half to one hour afterwards, not at the time of doing the excercise.)

Great to see that you worked out some of your issues. I hope that things keep improving!

Exactly correct

Thanks. But its only 3/4 hour and some wouldn’t say its intense exercise. Also, shortly afterwards, when I’ve had a shower I walk back - 1/2 hour so isn’t this cooling down. I’m one of those people who don’t get fitter after exercise , I stay the same
