Has Huel fallen behind? Have they stopped innovating? I tried Supersonic Food

Hi @ChristinaT  good to see you back!

I could, but that would be another thing that I do manually to make it better, but I can’t remove the tapioca starch.

For me the best and easiest thing that Huel could do is to remove sucralose from Huel (white). Of course they could improve a formula a bit, that single change would already make me happy and buy it again.

As I said, great idea, great ingredients, but the product fails when it comes to taste and ease of use, which are important factors.

You are (all) right, U/U is great, and without it I would not have stayed this long with Huel. I used it to dilute Original. Even though I don’t buy powder at this point anymore, I’m extremely happy with Hot & Savoury (other than the packaging of course, I hate that part  ).

I could of course just use U/U and sweeten it a bit (that I could probably do myself, I’ve even seen xylitol/stevia sweetener somewhere so I could probably make it work), but then I had to figure out how to flavour it myself to taste like Original, and that would be harder. But that would also be too much hassle in the end (for me).

I think I will wait and hope that you do change at least the sucralose part of 3.0. Until then, I’ll stick with Hot & Savoury.

Can’t wait to see what those incredible plans for 2022 are!

This is not going to happen. Sucralose is in there for a reason. It’s been discussed at length on the forum and there are articles about it on the main site. The vast majority, which is all Huel can ever hope to please, are fine with it. To change it to another sweetener would require a reformulation of all of the flavours to ensure they remain the same when used with a different sweetener. In fact, changing sweetener would be an enormous operation with the recipe, taste testing, manufacturing, labelling and website updating. Then you would have the avalanche of people who then complain because they preferred the version with sucralose.

It’s not really much effort. If you’re diluting original with U/U then you can’t really be that fussed about the flavour. You could easily buy some Xylitol, algae oil and vanilla flavouring to add to U/U and make exactly what you want. Instead you can’t really be bothered, and have made this rather ridiculous thread, and expect a company to reformulate its core product to meet your requirements.

Dramatic? Maybe… Ridiculous? Why would it be? Sucralose in the recipe made my try out a competitor. If I did it, there might be others doing that.

I don’t think I am the only one who dislikes sucralose. We might be be not as loud as others here, but believe me, there are a lot of people who don’t buy products with sucralose (either for taste or for health reasons, or for both).

An example from me: I buy random protein bars from time to time when I’m out in a shop (which does not happen that often lately), and there are two things that I check before buying them (apart from whether it is really a protein bar, or “just a bar”): are they vegan and do they contain sucralose (or some other artificial sweeteners). But that’s that not just bars, that’s true for everything.

I am preferring maple syrup as a sweetener these days.

Agree on the sucralose part. There are more and more research done on sucralose and its effects on gut bacteria and from my own experience I avoid sucralose. In the beginning I also diluted the original huel with u&u and noticed improvements within a week so its definately affecting the gut. It’s just that it may take longer time for a noticeble reaction for someone with a healthier gut flora (thats my conclusion anyways after reading many reports and checking with actual people).

Stevia however have never had any ill effect at all on me and cant really find reports or people that has had any noticeble ill effects from it.

I know very well that its just a tiny amount of sucralose in Huel but apparently that small amount is still enough to affect my gut and others. I would also blame the sucralose for the windy effects since I have none from regular u&u or black huel so it’s not the fibre contents which often gets blamed for this since both regular u&u and huel black still packs roughly the same fibre amount.

I really miss the oat Huel (original) and hope it comes back without sucralose. Meanwhile black huel works but dont know for how long.

Either way thanks Huel for giving us nutricious ”fast-food” and hope 2022 gives us more delicius stuff (without sucralose :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)!

I can see you mind is very much made up on sucralose. We know sucralose to be safe to consume and far far better than alternatives. I won’t go into detail, our thoughts are captured in detail with references here

What do you mean by this? Original Huel still exists and has always contained sucralose. Whether you had v2.3 Original or v3.0.

Either way, I’m glad Black is serving it’s purpose for you “for now”. What would change your mind on that?

I miss the taste of original huel but since the effects of sucralose is very much noticeable, I decided to stop it completely and my gut is better and not ”windy” anymore.

Huel original I could consume twice a day without getting tired of it (which ive done for more than a year) but Huel black i’m only consuming once a day and have a hard time consuming more and due to that i’m afraid I might get tired of it quicker (perhaps due to the higher protein?)

I remember reading that Original v2.3 had more sucralose than Other flavours v2.3.

It was still very low, but one of the improvements Huel highlighted with New Vanilla v2.3 was the reduction of Sucralose content.

So, it’s weird that Original v2.3 felt better on you than New Vanilla v2.3, and if this was the case, probably it wasn’t because of Sucralose.

I didnt mention any version since i’ve been through both the old and the new and as soon as I diluted any of them with u&u, I noticed improvements within a week.

This is not something that I noticed just once or twice. I made sure to find the actual culprit over the course of several months and its definately sucralose (iv’e had huel for a couple of years now). There’s no other ingredient that can do any difference comparing regular (original, vanilla etc) huel to u&u and now when im on huel black which has stevia instead, I have no issues either.

In other words regular huel u&u works fine for me since theres no sucralose but is hard to make tasty (imo) and huel black also works with w/e taste.

Now i’m not saying this to be a dick, I just think its important to mention it as I believe more are affected by the same issue but just not sure how many

have you tried talking to your GP or a dietitian about isolating your reaction to certain ingredients? identifying whether or not it’s sucralose that’s the issue? you might even have an intolerance

I’m not sure how many others are affected as Huel have been going for years and I’m sure they would have had sufficient feedback and changed…if needed

I’m not a fan of sucrolose, it leaves a nasty aftertaste so used to use U/U but now I love Huel Black. I think that Huel is very innovative and I’m glad that they take time before bringing out a new produce to make sure it’s right

Ok, so Complete Protein Bar includes erythritol. You were against xylitol but seem to be fine with erythritol’s (reduced compared to xylitol) laxative effects. Would that also work for Huel Powder?

Erythritol is in the Complete Protein bar because a relatively small amount is used and it works with the flavour and texture of the bar. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for Huel Powder, but it could be included in future iterations.
