I just received my first order today. I had my tentative first try… 1 scoop with 250ml water. I gave it a really good shake in the shaker provided but when I tried it the texture was overwhelmingly chalky. The flavour was ok (I ordered strawberry) but I just can’t get past the texture and couldn’t drink it. I’m autistic and a super-taster and hypersensitive to touch/textute (maybe also because I’m blind ).
I desperately want to persist with Huel as I’m an incredibly fussy eater but my pancreas and kidneys also don’t work very well so when all that’s factored in I struggle to get all of the nutrition I need to keep me healthy… most of what I eat is carbs mixed with fat, which doesn’t help. A healthy meal for me would be KFC because at least then I’m getting some protein! Speaking of which - I also bought some Huel black to try. I also got the daily greens but seeing as I hate veg (unless you count potatoes) then I suspect I won’t like it. I have the berry flavours of both Huel types. What could I do to get rid of the chalky feeling without making the Huel unhealthy? I’m type 1 diabetic so don’t want too much sugar. I’d thought about trying Skyr or Greek yogurt or a probiotic drink? My gut bacteria are probably awful after a lifetime of toast and crisps. I’m not normally a yogurt person - but I did enjoy the occasional crunch corner in the past! . Or, should I get a smoothie maker or something like that and throw in a banana and some frozen mixed berries? I do worry about the sugar… and I need to keep my potassium down too. I want to set a better example to my son as well as extending my life so that I’m around as long as I can be for him.
There are many things you can do to improve the texture. Obviously, a high speed blender is the easiest fix but if that’s not an option you can also try:
Use a mixer ball in the shaker – these can really help break down the lumps.
Once mixed, leave it in the fridge for an hour or so that the powder is fully absorbed into the liquid
Try using a little plant milk replacing some of the water
If you have a blender and as you mentioned – blending in some frozen berries or ice cubes will also help. One thing to keep in mind – using a blender with plant milks or bananas will make it quite a bit thicker so you may need to adjust the liquid volumes.
I’ll add that for me, an hour is nowhere near enough. I like to make mine the day before. It helps to have more than one shaker so you can have several “maturing” at once.
Blending, using Ice before shaking, keeping in the fridge overnight are all great suggestions which may help. All three together might be a good option too.
Also consider using milk or milk alternatives instead of water. My favourite is oat milk
It’s fun to experiment. You can mix with plant milk, leave in the fridge to smooth out and thicken up, and/or blend with whatever you fancy.
I like overnight oats mixed with overnight Huel Black, both chilled in the fridge for eight hours; add whatever’s at hand, maybe some milled seeds and bits of fruit, eat with a spoon. It makes a big difference to use good quality organic oats, three times the price but still very cheap.
The creaminess of the oats should remove any possibility of chalkiness.
