Hot & Savoury Meals - Cooking time + Water amount

Hi there,

I have finally tried these new products. So far the Mexican chilli and the Cajun pasta.
I followed the instructions and I used the black re-usable pot that came with the extint packages.

I found in both that the line in the pot is not enough water with these. One could say it’s down to preference but, seriously, it was hard to stir and I could turn it up side down and it stayed in the pot, spoon and all. Any chance you will make new re-usable pots with the adecuate line for these products?

Also, the bag said to wait for 5 minutes, I waited 7 in both. I would say the Cajun needed 9 and the Mexican chilli even more. Í used to wait 7 minutes before, it can’t be that my water is boiling different now. Anyone else?

Yes, In my opinion they definitely need more water and more time than indicated in the preparation instructions.

Today I tried the chicken and mushroom, I absolutley love it! But hey, 9 minutes at least, and give a bit of a stir after a few minutes so that the bits floating at the top also get cookied.

I use a scale to add the right amount of water. It says on the pack, 190ml or 200ml usually, so I use the kettle to pour that much in grams, according to the scale. With those H&S I find that five minutes is then fine, if a little too hot to eat.

However there are two offenders, the Mac and Cheeze and Pasta Bolognese, that just won’t cook properly when you follow the instructions. The pasta stays brittle and small, instead of absorbing the water. I use the amount of boiled water instructed, but I then give it a 30 seconds in the microwave and wait about 15 minutes.

If those cook for you and not for me, even passing the hot water through the scale, which would lose some heat in the process, there might be a difference in the water itself, like mine is harder than yours. I’ll get a water softener and report back if I find any difference.

I live in Scotland where the water is soft (no Glasgow kiss off it) and the recommended cooking times are too short.

I wait 15 mins for every H&S product. And always a touch more water. Go crazy, experiment.

A oouple of extra variables. 1. the longer you leave it the more the water soaks into something like Mexican Chilli, so the more you need to add (I add extra at the end, if necessary); 2. with a pasta dish if you happen to scoop up a lot of the powder that may make it thicker.

In an effort to move away from Plastic (especially heated plastic => microplastics) I’ve switched to using a thermos ( Thermos Stainless King Thermal Cup, To Go Coffee Mug, Stainless Steel Matte, 470 ml, Insulated Mug, Dishwasher Safe, Leak-Proof, Coffee to Go 7 H Hot, 18 H Cold, BPA-Free, 0.47 L); chose one that will fit in car drink holders so can use for coffee too. Advantage is that the Huel stays hotter whilst brewing which helps 1. for pasta, to soften; 2. if you’re in a cold room or outside where the plastic cup cools off too fast.

Oh, the Thermos doesn’t have a line as a guide but I figured out my-little-finger’s length from the top is about right for the water/mix!

I use a metal insulated food flask too. I prefer it to the Huel pot.

Good points. Too many variables, I’ll find what works for me. On the other hand, I still think the instructions are misleading and that could put off some people trying Huel for the first time.
