Huel version 2.0 is now live!

Very surprised that the addition of Fluoride was not considered a “principal change” (definitely a principle change!). I like what is being done with the display of fibre information though.

I knew it couldn’t just be me

I really wish someone could answer why the taste is so off

Hi James,

Thanks for having looked into the issue with so much depth, and thank you for the detailed response.

I retract my previous criticism, and look forward to hearing more about the issue as we get more information.

In the meantime, I’ll continue happily consuming (and recommending!) Huel!

Great stuff

Overall I like the changes, but I really don’t understand why you have decided to add so much sodium. 2000kcal of Huel 2.0 gives 2560mg of sodium, which has an RDA of 1500mg and a UL of 2300mg. I can understand adding some to meet the RDA. Overshooting the UL makes no sense to me, especially since over-consumption of sodium is so strongly linked to hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Good to see you’re continuing to develop the product (now where are the bars  ? ). What kind of volume of Xylitol will be used? The laxative effects can be quite unpleasant, would the amount be insignificant even for someone who was 100% Hueling?

My samples were fine.

I’m happy with the samples that I bought. I cannot taste any difference from the big bags that I have just finished. The best before date is June 2017, they’ll be long gone by then.

Regarding fluoride.

That one is probably going to be a Huel show stopper for me long term. If you drink tea regularly, for example, you’re almost certainly already getting too much fluoride. Add that to areas where the water supply is fluoridated and you’ll be ensuring that some Huel customers will be regularly receiving WAY over the recommendations. Around 10% of the UK population already receives water fluoridated to “optimum” levels. Although I’ve no idea how that can possibly be measured because it completely depends on how much a person drinks!

Looking on Wikipedia… Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Scotland, Iceland, and Italy. A 2003 survey of over 500 Europeans from 16 countries concluded that “the vast majority of people opposed water fluoridation”.

In some countries they are even taking measures to remove fluoride from drinking water.

I absolutely see no rational reason to add something so controversial when it’s not really a priority and as a consumer if I see the word fluoride on a food label I’ll turn to a different product.

Final post about these samples

Just mixed another batch up for tonight and it tastes good, like normal huel

So it must just be a select amount of the samples and now all, Eldrin got a few and it seems like ive had a few

No biggie, just hope the rest taste decent

I’ve been doing the unflavoured Huel for a good five months now and the only variance’s I’ve noticed were between the normal and the Gluten from (version 1.2). The Gluten free was thinner (all four bags), appeared to have less of the heavier particles in it. I can tell because I leave my Huel between 12 and 24 hours in the fridge so it settles out. The gluten free needs a couple of shakes to get it mixed, the normal unflavoured a decent work out and sometimes a spoon to shift the really stuck stuff. The taste I would say has been identical across the whole five months. Hoping 2.0 is the same

I don’t think getting a high enough salt intake is a problem in a modern diet. Quite the opposite. Is Huel now only for people who eat 100% Huel? I really don’t understand the logic here.

And plenty of people who are 100% Huel would’ve known what they were doing and supplemented with added salt accordingly (and may still do so with Huel V2.0, as required).

It’s supposed to contain everything you need, even if you were to eat 100% Huel. Does that help you understand the logic?

If the rest of your diet contains too much salt, then the problem lies with the rest of your diet.

People on 100% Huel should be able to expect that they’re getting everything their body needs. Our bodies need sufficient salt. The salt content of Huel is not high.

Did you read the linked resources? The salt content of Huel is high. The EU says that people must strive to consume less than 6g of salt per day, ideally maximum 3-4g. Huel contains 6.4g per day if 100% Huel.

Yes, it seems strange that they put it at 6.4g, which is 0.4g over the recommended maximum amount. But this is still only for 2,000 calories per day, whereas many people will have more than 2,000 calories. I for one can quite easily consume 2,000 calories of Huel and still eat an evening meal.

Although, to be fair, the addition of salt was probably a reaction to some people saying they thought they weren’t getting enough. I used to get headaches and I wondered whether it was due to the lack of salt.

The increase in salt content is as a result of now including sea salt in Huel. I presume it is easy to control how much sea salt is added to Huel. Hence they could have easily put the salt content in Huel all the way up to 5g/day and everyone would still be happy. And whoever needed more could easily add more.

For reference, Huel v1.2 contained 3.4g/day of salt.

The issue is not that there is added salt, but rather that they have added too much. As I said above, the recommended amount is only 3.75g (1500mg sodium), while the safe upper limit for daily consumption is 6g (2300mg sodium). Having 6.4g of salt per day is well above what most public health organisations think is ideal for one’s health.

Well the only way for us to reduce the consumption of salt and fluoride is to use less Huel now.

Good business logic there Huel…

How about Huel does not decide they are going to make the product “amazing” for people who cant afford and/or dont have access to toothpaste (not the target market) and let people add salt if they need it?!

This is on par with the “add more gum arabic” for people who are not capably of using less water to thicken up their Huel.

Here is a brainwave! On the label, print ADD SEA SALT AS REQUIRED and hey presto no problems for anyone.

I hope V2.1 is live within the next few weeks and sorts out all this astonishing stupidity.

Dont be like Microsoft with patch after patch after patch, work through all of this carefully and the use some logic :+1:
