My (taste) diary

So I’ve just got my first order of Huel (yay!) and I wanted to keep a diary of sorts. This is mainly going to be about my different flavour combinations — I like to mix it up, and I’m not a massive vanilla fan, so I’m going to try a few things.

Feel free to add your own recipes!

I tend to use 2 scoops of Huel (~76g) and around 550ml water. I like my Huel thin. So far I’m really likely the fact that I can spread my meal over 3-4 hours really easily… I’m definitely a grazer and get hungry really quickly even after a huge meal. So being able to spread my meal out and just have a few mouthfuls when I’m starting to feel peckish is fantastic.

So I started with the unflavoured and unsweetened sample, after trying my friend’s vanilla V1.1 and finding it too sweet.

Un-Huel Chocolate
400ml water
50g Huel
3 (heaped) tsp Cadbury’s Chocolate Powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Notes: Tasted like chalk. I could barely taste the chocolate flavour over the Huel (so much for unflavoured, right?) Despite being unpleasant, it wasn’t undrinkable, though it took me two sittings.

Un-Huel Mocha
500ml water
50g Huel
3 (heaped) tsp Cadbury’s Hot chocolate powder
1 heaped tsp chocolate spread
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp (decaf) instant coffee granules, dissolved in a tiny bit of water

Notes: Muuuuch better. Actually tasted like a less sweet iced mocha. Definitely drinkable and not unpleasant. Could still taste the chalkiness and couldn’t quite see myself getting used to it, so when I ordered my first proper batch, I went for vanilla V1.2.

Now, onto the vanilla.

Vanilla Toffee
600ml water
76g Huel (2 scoops)
1/2 tsp toffee flavour system

Notes: So I thought I’d start off simple with the default flavour systems. Definitely prefer this to the other two versions. I can’t really taste the toffee very well, it’s just a hint. Tastes sweet and creamy, with a slightly bitter aftertaste (flax or stevia?). Beats forcing porridge down myself for breakfast though.

So, this took forever to upload. I had an issue the first time I tried, and then I forgot about it. So it’s actually been a couple weeks since I got my Huel. At first I wasn’t finding it filling enough, especially for work. But it’s been really useful at uni and for the last few days I’ve been eating “normal” breakfast and using it for morning snack-lunch-afternoon snack (one single 76g portion).
Left my Huel bottle at uni yesterday. Devastated. I’m drinking smaller portions out of the nutri-ninja cups right now.

Vanilla Toffee
Tried it again with 1 level tsp flavour system and didn’t notice the bitter aftertaste.

Vanilla Chocolate
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
100 ml water

Notes: Mmmm… tastes like chocolate milkshake.
The reason I have water twice is ‘cause my nutri ninja can only hold 500ml including the solids, so I add an extra 100ml (rinsed in the nutri ninja container) afterwards to thin it.

Vanilla Mocha
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
2 tsp coffee granules (decaf)
100ml water

Notes: So I’ve tried this twice, once with just blended granules, once with pre-dissolved granules. Dissolving is definitely better. Blending the coffee granules straight into it gives a really strong, uneven and slightly grittier flavour. Either way, it’s pretty good. Especially if you need a coffee kick in the morning.
It’s a log more liquid than your normal coffee mug, so make sure you put 2-3 times your normal serving in taste-wise.

Vanilla
400ml water
76g Huel
100ml water

Notes: Yup, tastes like vanilla and tasted like Huel. Bit like a milkshake.

Vanilla Chocolate Toffee
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
1 level tsp toffee flavour system
100 ml water

Notes: Not much different from the chocolate one really. The toffee isn’t a particularly strong flavour.

Vanilla Chocolate Banana
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
3/4 small banana
100 ml water

Notes: Bleugh. Too much banana. The banana didn’t blend particularly well, and made it kind of gummy to drink, and it stuck in my throat. Worth noting I’m not always a fan of banana, particularly banana drinks.

Vanilla Chocolate Raspberry
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
2 handfuls frozen raspberries
100 ml water

Notes: I actually made this with half the above amounts (inc water and Huel). The raspberry overpowers the chocolate a bit, but it’s pretty damn good anyway. The grittiness of the seeds is greater than that of the Huel and kind of masks/overpowers it, which I kind of like. It’s more like drinking a raspberry smoothie than Huel, texture-wise….and taste-wise.

Vanilla Apple Peanut Butter
1 apple, peeled
400ml water
76g Huel
1 tbsp peanut butter
100ml water

Notes: The PB added too many calories and was overpowering, will definitely use less next time. Otherwise it was a nice change from my usual chocolate, and it works really well.

Vanilla Chocolate Vanilla
400ml water
76g Huel
3 heaped tsp cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
100ml water

Notes: Yeah, this one was a little weird, especially after I told you I don’t like vanilla. But I got a different cocoa powder which was too bitter, so I tried to add some more sweetness with the vanilla extract. Didn’t even think to just use less cocoa powder until after I’d made it (which I did from then on). I could taste the alcohol. Was odd.

Vanilla Chocolate Almond
400ml water
76g Huel
2 heaped tsp cocoa powder
1 tsp almond butter
1 tsp honey
100ml water

Notes: Used less cocoa powder, for reasons mentioned above, and so as not to overpower the almond. Was pretty good. I only had crunchy almond butter so it had some little bits in it, but I kind liked it. Reminded me a little of ferrero rocher.

Vanilla Apple Pie
1 apple, peeled and cored
400ml water
76g Huel
1/2 tsp cinnamon
100ml water

Notes: Okay, so I overdid it on the cinnamon. Unless you REALLY like cinnamon, just go for a pinch or two. The only apples I had were small cox ones, and they’re just not enough and the Huel/cinnamon overpowers it too much. Use something either larger or with a stronger flavour. Pink Lady worked in the apple PB recipe above.

Vanilla Huel Failcakes
1 banana
100ml water
114g Huel
2 eggs

Notes: They were meant to be pancakes but failed rather, hence the name. I got the amounts all wrong, but just kept messing with stuff until it looked about the right consistency. They were still disgusting, but I left them to set overnight and rolled them up with chocolate spread in the morning. 30 seconds in the microwave and they were pretty decent for breakfast. I’ll try again and get you guys an updated recipe at some point. If you want to try, I’d start with 1 scoop huel, about the same amount of liquid, and your egg. Then add more water/Huel until it looks like pancake batter.

Try the coconut peanut butter - it is really nice in huel.
