So many people trying to save a planet that doesn’t need to be saved at all

As a planner, I have found the 15 minute cities stuff particularly odd. But more an example of conspiracy theory stuff going for a benign idea (taking the concept of having shops and stuff within walking distance) and just making things up (saying you won’t be able to travel further than 15 minutes away from your home on weekends).

More generally, while I am wary of the constant assumption that technology will save us, and fairly certain warming has already likely to be very bad for large parts of the world (think 10% reduction in GDP at least), there is some hope.

Given that the vast majority of greenhouse gases come from “energy”, and energy is getting “cleaner”, there is scope for improvements, even if they are not as much as could be hoped for.

Of course, the ideal would be a world carbon trading system, with caps set to reduce temperatures from current levels. But that seems unlikely.

Fun fact, up until 1900, electric cars held the land speed records, and were generally seen as the future. London had electric taxi’s, mostly competing with horse drawn vehicles.

Due to a few reasons, industry working out mass production on combustion cars first, the discovery of oil in large parts of the world, and the range issue of electric cars at the time, combustion cars won out.
It’s easy to look at the green house gas emissions graph and think…if only…

What exactly do you expect ME to do…I drink huel, so not meat…I drive a petrol car but sorry I cannot afford 20grand on an electric one…I cannot afford to change my boiler or afford to fit solar panels, I don’t eat out, I don’t spend unnecessarily, I recycle so that the UK can the pay to ship to it to India to pollute the seas there (yeah recycling really worth it when our country can’t be arsed to actually recycle) I haven’t being on a plane in 15years, I don’t travel at the weekends…so come on do tell me…how exactly should I change my existence to help climate change :woman_shrugging:t2: so hearing it every god dam day gets so boring when what do you expect ME personally to do to help the planet!

Engaging in non-violent civil disobedience until your government abandons its genocidal and ecocidal policies, bans new oil and gas exploration, supports animal farmers and fishers in an urgent and just transition to a plant based food system, rewilds land and sea and leads in international efforts to do the same would be a pretty reasonable thing for literally any responsible adult to do, under the circumstances.

That’s a frankly ignorant, irresponsible and pathetic thing to say under the circumstances.

 you guys!

Tracy it sounds like your heart’s in the right place, ie in the fight. We can each only do as much as we’re able, but if we all did it we’d make a huge difference.

& since you ask: besides the decisions you make day-to-day about your own consumption, I’d say the best thing you can do, to do more than you already are doing, is VOTE. It’s the only real lever we have to change things from the top.

Also support those who try to spread the word about the crisis and the risks we face. There are far too many people who are in denial and if we’re going to make a difference we need them on side.

As things start to get bad it’s the poorest who will suffer first, and most. They need our help now.

A noble speech, but look how hard people tried to stop this hideously expensive white elephant of a train set from being built through the spine of the country and that didn’t work.

I agree, violent direct action is what is needed. No pussyfooting.
