Using Huel for my weight loss journey (VLCD, Newcastle diet)

Hi mate I’m doing fast 800 at the moment and my weight loss stalled i think it was the crazy heat we experienced in the beginning of the week. Lots of drinking and fluid retention i reckon.

Thanks for that mate, much appreciated. Where are you in the journey so far??

Hi mate I’m 5’11 and was 16.5 stone. Beginning of January i did twelve weeks of fast 800 and lost 2.5 stone felt really good…

Fast forward to a fortnight ago, had regained a stone so back on the 800 fast. I saw a thing about Huel on YouTube and realised that a black shake and a hot huel would meet calories and protein requirements.

So i came here and saw your thread I’m pretty sure that a month of eating just huels with plain water to drink will get me to 13 stone… Ultimate weight aim is 12.5 stone.

Remember the hot Huel stuff has carbs. And the thing about the 800-calorie diet is there are no carbs, you’re in ketosis. So you’ll need to get that 200 calories outside the shakes from non-starchy veg.

Weight loss can fluctuate from one week to the next for many reasons and it can be hard to pinpoint exactly, even if you’re eating the same things. Some things to consider would be fluids, hormones, etc.

In addition, at the start of weight loss, a bunch of water also gets lost, especially if you are not intaking a high amount of carbs, which are stored in water. Carbs can certainly be consumed with weight loss, but if you are following a specific pattern where carbs (as well as overall calorie intake) are decreased, you may see a bit of a sharper decrease in weight in the beginning due to fluids.

With that being said, you want to be sure you’re staying hydrated (and it’s great you’ve mentioned the electrolyte tablets too!) as this is very important.

I would also try to think a bit bigger picture where possible and see how the trend continues over the next couple weeks too as well as keeping track of this with your doctor and a dietitian, if possible.

I lost a bunch of weight and I had the same problem, I went a week without losing any weight then a week with a 5 pound loss, this when on for about 6 months before I really started to plateau…

Well, I got a bit depressed with the plateau and fell off the wagon.

But I’m back on it and I’m back at 180kg.

So I had a weird situation where I put on weight and found myself at 182kg despite the huge calorie deficit. Which confused the Hell out of me.

I have a medical condition with my heart and sometimes it can cause fluid retention. I noticed my ankles were swelling and realised I was filling with water. So I’ve been taking water tablets for the last week and that’s been equalising me and revealing that I have indeed been losing weight, it has just been masked by the water retention.

So I’m down to 176KG this morning. So that’s 14kg down in around a month.

Note: I still probably have fluid on my legs so I may have lost more, I’ll know in the coming days and weeks I suppose.

Well done to you. 1 day at a time.:hugs:

Weight is staying around 176KG at the moment. Water retention is screwing with my weight I think.

I also obtained some testing sticks to confirm I was in Ketosis… I am. If you’re in Ketosis and have a very low-calorie diet… you gotta be burning your own body fat. You just have to be.

It sounds like you’ve been working really hard with it and have been disciplined! I know it can be frustrating when the number on the scale doesn’t move, but it will happen. It’s good you’re keeping a graph so it’s easier to see the changes over time. Short term it won’t always look great, but long term you’ll see huge changes!

Down another KG so 175 now. 15KG down so far. Water retention is still an issue though, going to up my water tablets to two a day to see if I can’t get the swelling down.

Still showing as 174KG today. But things seem to be going in the right direction so I’m not worried.

Edit - LOL, I’ve reread the above and realised that means I’ve actually dropped another KG. I thought I was 174kg before, but no, that’s another down.

Thanks for posting this. Genuinely inspirational and helpful. I’ve been put on the Newcastle regime as well and, following a discussion with my GP, I’ll be using Huel. I’ve a goal of keeping on 800 calories a day until the start of the World Cup in Nov.

Well mate, I wish you all the best and I’m glad my wee post has helped you in some small way.

It’s difficult, but it’s worth it. I already feel much healthier and happier. So stick to it and keep it up.

Remember to drink lots of water!

My weight is sticking at 174KG at the moment, but I’m sticking to it. I’m sure it’ll come down soon enough.

Another KG down. This week was tough though and I really struggled and I’m not losing weight nearly as quickly as I was. But I should be down a total of 20kg by the end of the month… hopefully.

My weight is fluctuating a lot day-to-day… probably the water retention issue.

You’re only 3kgs away, and half a month missing. Keep going, keep yourself focused on the outcome, and enjoy your journey!

So, I ended up going to the office and meeting my colleagues for the first time in my employment, despite working with them for two years due to the pandemic. This involved going out for drinks afterwards… and well, I am well and truly off diet. There was even a dirty kebab in the wee hours of the morning. Yeasterday was a write off too, I thought as long as I’m burning off alcohol, no point in going straight back into the diet, I didn’t go wild, but I did eat a few things I had missed.

But after recovering yesterday and making peace with the carbageddon… I am back on the diet again today. Probably set myself back a bit there, but this is a long-term plan and setbacks are okay as long as I stay on target long-term.

This sounds like a great day! Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are allowed to enjoy life.

Consistency is far more about getting back on after falling than it is about avoiding days off entirely.
