Using Huel for my weight loss journey (VLCD, Newcastle diet)

That’s way better than a 80-20 approach to a diet, which most healthy adults and people who train aim to keep. 1 day of indulgence after 15, a 94-6! Outstanding.

My weight has been all over the place. I clearly piled on water weight once I broke the diet, check this out.

Utterly wild! Will be interesting to see where it goes the rest of the week.

173-180-177, as you can see, 7kg gained, and 3 lost, so 4 “gained” overall.
Give it time and it will be lower than 173 in a few days.
It happens all the time to me when I go out on Saturday to have dinner with friends (even if I stay “healthy”), all the salt, and scratchy things I have, will suck in water as much as they can, and I gain 2-3kg over a night, which are then lost in the following days.
Don’t be afraid!

Looks like it is starting to trend down again and stabilise. So I was knocked back, but it’s not that bad really, just need to keep sticking to it and see this as a long term thing rather than seeing it day to day.

More peer-reviewed evidence for the diet.

Keep in mind this diet was never designed to be long-term. It was designed as an extreme crash diet to reverse type II diabetes with extreme calorie deficit to force the body to consume fat around the internal organs and as such revert the body in 50% of cases to a pre-diabetes type 2 state.

I am doing this because I’m a gluten for punishment and I know for a fact this works it is a simple diet I can follow with no wiggle room, and no hours of sums and weighing food to figure out if I can eat a pretzel or not. I would prefer death to doing equations to figure out what I can eat every day, I much prefer a painful, but a clear way forward.

This is an extreme path, I doubt it would suit many people. There are far more gentle, and easier to sustain methods of losing weight. I am just a weirdo, and this is what is working for me.

172kg, just 2kg away from a milestone of 20kg.

So that’s more than 20KG lost!!!

I got super busy there for a while and so disappeared for a bit, but I’m back and the weight is still coming off.

It is really tough to stick to, but the more progress I see the more determined I am to stick at it.

166.5 this morning, could hardly believe the scales! I weighed myself like three times. LOL 23.5KG down.

You’re going strong! I admire you, I would have given up a long time ago.

I had a rough few weeks where depression kinda got me. I cheated for a week, now back on it. Gained some weight, now my weight kinda is around where I was when I fell off the wagon. Some days it’s 166, today it’s a bit higher. Mostly water retention I think.

I just see this is a long term thing though, I expect I’ll be still at this by summer next year. Christmas I intend to do a keto thing so I will eat over Christmas but keep it keto to try and avoid massive weight gain. What I’ve noticed is the moment I eat I seem to put on 10KG, but that is almost entirely fluid retention. Then I start the diet again and I lost pretty much all of it within five days. It is frightening to see the scale increase so much so quickly though. So I must remember that at the end of this diet I can expect a 10KG bump upwards once I finish so I’ll need to overshoot my goal by 10KG to keep myself right.

You’re smashing it. So impressed by your dedication when the scale doesn’t show you what you want to see. Really awesome.

Love the new profile picture too! Very apt.

The graph doesn’t show the hole story. I got a bit depressed, ate some, put on some weight, and got back on the horse and am back on target.

I’ve just seen this and you’re doing phenomenally well! I’m awe-struck.

Have you ever looked at the HCG diet? Long story short, I discovered it a year or 2 before it went big. It’s also 500cal/day, and the argument against it is that it’s no different to a starvation diet. My mum had a lot of health issues that weren’t being dealt with properly and weighed the same as you. I first passed the diet to her best friend, who was a senior RN in the emergency ward at our biggest city hospital- as it sounded ridiculous and too good to believe. Her response: it all made perfect sense, and she was absolutely furious that it had been shoved into the dark when she’d spent YEARS watching morbidly obese patients get gangrene, have limbs amputated, or die terribly due to their weight related health complications.

My mum lost 90lbs in 90 days (a long history of having your will power but NOTHING worked- I won’t list reasons why). Betty, her RN friend used it to lose 30lbs in 30 days and kept it off for years. She used it again the same way after surgery that required steroids that made her gain weight. Years ago, also has kept it off.

My experience was the same: 28lbs in 28 days that brought me to 24% BMI, so I wasn’t in the “lots to lose so lots of weight loss” category.

The reason I’m talking about it is no muscle wasting. When I did my round, I’ve been a pear shape my entire life. Even though I ended up a full 10 lbs heavier than my “best” weight years before then, when I’d been doing 3 hours of yoga every week and had a 6 pack, at 150 lbs after hcg, my thighs were thin for the first time in my life. It really changed my body composition.

It requires iron willpower which you have in spades, but thought it may interest you.

Regardless, you’re absolutely SMASHING it! I think you’re incredible.

You started at 190kg you’re now at 165kg, that’s the important bit - well done!

Thanks for sharing your story Lauren, it’s great to hear you’ve had so much success.

I’m going to have to strongly recommend not following this diet. It’s been around since the 1950s and as far as I’m aware HCG is not approved for you use as weight loss medication. Please speak to your doctor if you are considering such a low calorie diet.

I understand that it’s not recommended for weight loss and isn’t medically approved. The fact it was available in the 50s and had been suppressed is exactly what made our RN friend so furious as so many lives could have been saved.

Until this study which OP is following which is 600 calories, you would have had the same uproar about it being a starvation diet. Ketogenic diets were viciously mocked as being utterly unhealthy only a short time ago where eating dry toast, pasta and no oil or fat was the way to cure diabetes- high carb, low fat was actually taught at hospitals to type 2 diabetics.

The only thing that happened to my mum was the $1200/month of meds she was on went down to $300/month.

Also, fwiw, while her GP couldn’t officially “sanction” her diet, he had her come in for monthly checkups which led him to not only saying “just keep doing what you’re doing”, but also using hcg himself to lose 50lbs.
