Why I have a LOT of lumps?

I’ve just received a shaker ball, and it does make a difference. I still get some small lumps, but no more big ones. It’s less to wash up than using a blender.

This seems to be my favourite topic

I’d like to share another couple of tricks I found for mixing Huel:

  1. It seems there’s a sweet spot with regards to quantity of water per shaker. Seems to have to do with the dynamics of shaking. Too little and it’s too thick to mix, too much and there’s too little air left.
  2. While the ice separator IMO doesn’t help with the mixing, it definitely helps hold the lumps from being eaten. The lumps that remain, if any, can then be shaken with a minimal amount of water until they break and can be consumed.

Leave the grill in.

The grill is NOT an ice separator, it has never been it will never be.
It is intended to help mixing and destroying lumps. So shake thoroughly and a little bit vigorously :muscle:, and that will be enough.

The grill is an ice separator, in that the grill is in place to keep solids (including ice) in the blender bottle when you drink.

A blender ball is intended to help mixing and destroying lumps.

I’m sorry, but you couldn’t be more wrong. If you don’t believe me, come to my office and be ridiculed by the same half dozen protein-shake drinkers who spent a good hour laughing at me for saying the same thing after I’d tried getting rid of the lumps without one.

You are right: I couldn’t be more wrong.

From a blender bottle website, " …and an enclosed mesh grill which avoids lumps so you can enjoy your drink straight from the bottle."

I’d suggest using a blender, it is much better in my opinion.

I don’t really like drinking Huel is I just have to shake it. I don’t think I can shake it very well, haha.

I (probably incorrectly) read your response as sarcasm so …

It wasn’t sarcasm.

That’s why I also “liked” your post. And included a quote that clearly proves your point, and discredits mine.

One thing that can also work well to avoid lumps is to mix less at one time, so try putting in half the water and powder that you would have for a full bottle, e.g. 1.5 scoops with 300ml water. Shake that, and it will be far less lumpy than if you tried to shake a full shaker’s worth. It must be because it has more space to bash about inside.

Ah, I see. It’s possible to see who gave the like. Cool. Sorry about that.

I bought the Promixx 2.0 blender but the capacity isn’t sufficient and the smoothness of the mix is not that great. It was also quite loud so I’m keeping it at home.

I now mainly use the Huel blender and I really don’t have a problem with what it produces. You need to give it a good shake but nothing overly strenuous and the best mix I’ve discovered is 450ml of water with 100g of Huel. It’s far less watery and much smoother than the recommended 5:1 mix. It slides down :relaxed:

I don’t mind the texture of shaken Huel but I persuaded one of my workmates to try Huel and the small lumps totally turned him against the whole idea. He said the flavour was fine but the texture made him gag.

I guess it’s not for everyone.

I suspect if I’d given him blended Huel he would have enjoyed it a bit more.

Just finished our first bag of (vanilla) Huel and although it’s perfect from a blender, the main reason we wanted to use it is for hiking where there is no access to a blender. We have another bag to go, but unless we can find a way of improving the mix it will be the last. Mixing by hand always results in medium-size lumps. Tried water first, Huel first, leaving to stand, different amounts of shaking etc, but although most seems to dissolve, at least 10-20g (of 100) clumps. The grid helps, but a lot of lumps get through and losing so much is crazy. Our water is (slightly) soft. At the moment, drinking huel that hasn’t been blended is ( to quote one Huel review) ‘like being sick backwards’.

I was having loads of lumps as well, but the main reason was that I was compacting huel in the scoop to have a more accurate measure.

What I discover is that if you try to refill half of the scoop with huel and then shake the powder a little bit within the scoop and so on till you have the full scoop it will make a huge difference when you prepare your meal, as huel is not that compact and more loose.

Then I put 350ml of liquid in the shaker, add my 3 scoops of huel, use my shaker with the mixing ball (the spiral ball that you are talking about) for 10 - 20 seconds and then I add 100 - 150ml more of liquid and I shake again for another 15-20 secs

The difference is huge, no more lumps like before, since I am doing it in this way I finally don’t have the need to buy a blender which I was about to buy.

And I drink it right away, I don’t like to put the shake in the fridge as it means I have to decide in advance when I am going to drink huel, I just drink it when I need to.

Pd I use 350 ml of milk that I have in the fridge and then refill with tap water,as I don’t like to drink hot or warm huel.

Hope it can help someone.

I quite like chewing on the lumps.

Just sayin’ :smirk:

The reason you/we are getting lumps in Huel is moisture. Moisture gets into the powder and affects consistancy. That moisture causes the powder to bind togeather and thus creates lumps that are difficult to shake into disolving. A blender get past that. You’ll find that a fresh bag is absolutely fine, after a while it gets worse. The biggest problem is the bags are shipped without the zip lock being closed, as it’s heat sealed, and powder gets into the ziplock, during transport, and prevents it from sealing properly in the future. If you clean out the zip lock it should seal and it should last longer before it “lumps up”.

Hi @OFark Flicking the zip to clear it usually works a treat. I haven’t found ‘lumpiness’ to increase over the lifetime of the zip bag and I rarely use a blender unless adding fruit or ice. Normally just use the shaker bottle with mixer ball added then stick it in the fridge for a few hours. Mind you, these days I tend to decant my Huel powder into a clip-top cereal container. I do take a zip bag when I go camping however and have no problems with that.

Yeah that’s my normal thing, the clear the zip lock, but with Chocolate flavour (first time I’ve had it) it didn’t work.

I’ve been toying with storage containers to be honest, may be time to go for it.
