Just ordered my first batch of Huel and am super psyched to try this out. I’m passionate about fitness and nutrition and a total control freak when it comes to macros sourced from whole ingredients. The on-the-go and consciously-developed aspects of Huel are ridiculously appealing for me because I’m always on the move!
Quick question. I am by no means new to protein shakes (or generally nutrient-dense liquid meals, whatever you want to call it haha) and own a blender bottle with a metal ball to help break up the powder better. I’m traveling for the next month or so, meaning I currently do not have access to a blender (sad times, I know). I read that some people struggled with the heavier texture of Huel. If they’ve tried it, does anyone have feedback on whether the metal blender ball helps break up the powder for a smoother consistency?
I’m cool with it either way. What matters most to me is the nutrition and Huel is KILLING it on that front Both thumbs up.
Any other tips would be most appreciated. Definitely planning on making this a gradual transition!
I’ve tried a shaker with a blender ball in it, but didn’t find it helping much - still lots of large lumps (although as many people have said on here, the lumps really aren’t that unpleasant).
Because I use Huel at work, where I can’t use a proper electric blender, I’ve actually invested in a Promixx, with an upgraded motor. If you google Promixx 2.0, that should bring it up. It’s basically a protein shaker with a built in battery-powered blender in the bottom. The original one runs on AAA batteries and isn’t really up to the task of dealing with the thickness of Huel, but the 2.0 version uses a high-torque rechargeable motor that works a treat. A bit pricey (all in, you’ll be looking at £30+ for what is essentially a fancy protein shaker!), but very portable, and is perfect for my needs.
I have been using the grid that came with the shaker and the blender ball together. The blender ball breaks things up nicely, the grid filters out any lumps that are left. This seems to me to work as well as an electric blender would.
I tried the ball and the grid, neither seem to make much difference for me. A good hard shake, turning the shaker upside down and up the right way whilst shaking does the job for me.
I made the mistake initially of putting the powder in first, which tends to make big lumps and areas stuck to the side/bottom that can’t be shifted. If you add water first then put the powder on top and shake like crazy the grid really works well and there won’t be much in the way of lumps.
I’ve also bought one of these for when I want to add anything lumpy, like ginger, to the mix. Interestingly when you use it with neat Huel it changes the flavour a bit, I think because it breaks up all the little seeds, making it nuttier.
Try shaking one scoop at a time, e.g. 200ml water + 1 scoop and shake, add another 200ml water + 1 scoop and shake, etc. Works a treat for lump free drinks (unless you carry a Nutribullet blender in your car like me).
I have not tried that but I have not had a problem with lumps. Around a hundred (I know, I sound a little OCD now ) hard shakes seems to work for me. My wife and friend did report that problem though. Maybe it is just a matter of using too little force?
