Hot & Savoury update - real talk

Understood Jonno, thank you for the feedback! :raised_hands:

Sorry that a lot of the options that you already use will be going away. We are always working behind the scenes so we might see new flavours which are gluten-free in the future so watch this space! :eyes:

Regarding points 3 and 4 we have answered this higher up in the thread, happy to go over them again with you if you would like any further information or advice on this one

I won’t be buying hot huel any more because mac and chese, carbonara and korma are my favourites

@Mark_Huel Hello! Are there any updates on when the big bags of H+S are going to run out? I’m looking forward to the change but not a fan of surprises! I order 2 bags of Mac n Cheese a month. Do you have an estimate as to when this will switch over? Thank you.

We’ve planned for the switchover to happen in April. We have stock to run until that time as previously mentioned however this can change if people move their subscription around or would like to receive more etc!

@Mark_Huel i’ve only just restarted with the pouches and it seems like there are some good changes coming later this year. this variety pack sachet suggestion would be ideal so i can have a different flavour each day or at least try out each of the flavours in the new sachet format.

That’s great. Thank you!

One last question (I hope that’s OK!) will my subscription automatically run into the new sachets or will I be required to change my subscription to get them?

So with subscriptions, It will automatically roll into the new pouch format. You’ll always be notified 3 days before it’s due to drop so you’ll be fully aware of the switch!

That sounds like a great idea. Like CupASoup multi packs. Could sell it as a variety pack SKU maybe have a pasta SKu and a non pasta SKU

Even though this means the discontinuation of the only flavor I buy, your reasoning and explanation make perfect sense. I will be sad to loose my flavor, and I am reticent to try the small few non-spicy alternatives, I still understand why this was the right move for the company. Demanding my favorite flavor to stay at the risk of compromising the company for everyone makes no sense.

Thank you for making this post, it honestly kept me as a customer when I otherwise would have just thought “Damn, they got rid of the best flavor, time to switch companies.”

Keep up the hard work, and I’ll try to find a new favorite flavor. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for your feedback!

We pride ourselves on being as open as we possibly can so appreciate your kind words regarding this

The pots seem to have some nicer/more interesting flavours than the sachet, but I don’t want all the extra packaging waste, is it not viable to allow all flavours to be in selected in either pot or sachet form? It has felt like the ranges have been getting more and more restricted for customers like my wife and I, who have been having H&S every work day or over 2.5 years now - Carbonara and Mac & Cheeze are our top flavours.

Also, will the Sachets be recyclable, as this seems like it would be a lot more packaging waste per pertion if not?

In all honesty, after the price increase that was sold to us as “What you guys asked for”, and now these changes, I will be looking into other options as Huel seems to be moving towards more packaging waste and fewer flavour choices.

This is a cool idea, not sure if it could be like a logistical nightmare but that being said it’s something I can pass on.

While not recyclable, our pouches are lightweight and account for less than 3% of the product’s carbon footprint. We understand this is an important concern. Right now, recyclable options don’t offer the durability needed to protect our meals and reduce food waste. We’re always reviewing ways to improve while keeping quality high.

I’m sorry you feel this way. Although you’ve provided feedback, if you have further questions or things you’d like me to raise for future consideration please let me know and I’ll be happy to!

Hey Mark!

Long-time Huel fan here; I’ve both ordered, and recommended Huel to others (from strangers to loved ones) countless times over the years.

I really appreciate the active communication in this thread—both in the detailed post, and all the replies to users (happy or not). For me at least, this definitely helps foster a greater feeling of trust, and hope that the company might listen to our feedback and brainstorm more ways to move forward.

Like a couple others above, I made an account specifically to voice my own feelings and concerns about these changes.

Less importantly: Agreed with others that Mac n Cheeze was an awesome flavor, and that I personally never had issues with distribution of ingredients. I could always shake the pouch as needed, and sometimes I’d even enjoy intentionally scooping a little more/less powder into a given meal.

More importantly: This change does seem like a significant increase in the amount of plastic packaging per order. I know I’m not alone as a Huel customer in caring about our collective environmental impact as consumers and producers.

While not recyclable, our pouches are lightweight and account for less than 3% of the product’s carbon footprint.

This framing feels misguided/misleading: as I understand it, carbon footprint was never the main concern with plastic packaging. It’s that plastic can remain in landfills (or the environment) for centuries or longer, and in that time, can degrade into microplastics that accumulate in soil and waterways and can harm both humans and our fellow animals.

Producing only vegan products is one of the things I love about Huel (and hopefully this never changes!) and I’m guessing is one of the reasons Huel has a lower carbon footprint than the vast majority of food producers out there. You’re doing amazing work on this front for sure.

However, reducing plastic waste is another major pillar of environmentally conscious production. Some customers (like me) will feel that this move is a step backward in Huel’s overall commitment to sustainability. And given that I often recommend Huel to others for ethical reasons (e.g. recommending it as a delicious, environmentally-friendly option for new vegans to learn how to get more nutrients in), this is a fairly significant concern.

I do order RTD sometimes which of course is no stranger to plastic either; but at least they’re recyclable and I can also order large bags of powder at the same time. I probably wouldn’t order Huel if only RTD were available.

All that said, I am really so grateful for all the company has done for myself and others over the years, and again I appreciate the efforts to be transparent and responsive in this thread.

Welcome to the forum!!

Firstly, to hear you feel this way is amazing so thank you so much for sharing. Community is important and I want to make sure you guys feel this way also.

I just want you to know that this is not what I want you to feel. As you have seen we’ve tried to be as open as we possibly can. We will continue working towards better packaging, but our primary focus must remain on what’s inside the pouch, as this has the greatest impact. The ingredients we choose for our products typically account for more than 75% of the overall impact, including carbon footprint and water usage. In contrast, packaging generally contributes less than 3% of the impact, and over 85% of the packaging we use is recyclable. However, that doesn’t mean we overlook plastic packaging. We continuously assess our packaging as technology advances, ensuring that any changes we make truly reduce our environmental impact.

I hope this answers your points but if this isn’t the case please let me know and I’ll happily get more information across to you

Absolutely! Thanks, Mark.

Totally—I appreciate that you and Huel are being so open here with the proactive communication and responding to our concerns and questions. I also want to be clear that I’m not suggesting there was any intent to mislead.

That said, I do think it’s very important to clarify that the main concern with plastic packaging has never been carbon footprint, but rather its persistence as waste, accumulation in the environment, and potential toxicity to wildlife and humans (e.g. through soil and waterways).

It likewise wouldn’t make sense to frame a hypothetical increase in carbon footprint (e.g. if a Huel competitor started using helicopters for shipping, as an extreme example) in terms of minimal plastic waste.

The ingredients we choose for our products typically account for more than 75% of the overall impact, including carbon footprint and water usage. In contrast, packaging generally contributes less than 3% of the impact, and over 85% of the packaging we use is recyclable.

Thanks for elaborating here; I’d love to hear more about how this 3% figure is calculated? Does it mainly account for carbon footprint and water usage, or does it also factor in plastic waste persistence and potential ecological toxicity? If so, how are these different environmental factors weighted to arrive at the 3% total?

I genuinely appreciate that most of Huel’s packaging is recyclable. The concerns mentioned here are specific to the above changes to the H&S line. As you say, ideally any changes Huel makes should reduce our environmental impact; but these packaging changes seem to do the opposite for the H&S line.

I hope this answers your points but if this isn’t the case please let me know and I’ll happily get more information across to you

One other question: Could Huel continue offering the bulk pouch format for H&S, alongside the new sachets, for customers who prefer a lower-plastic option? Presumably this would keep everyone happy—those who prefer (or would only buy) the larger pouches, those who prefer the sachets, and even Huel as a company by retaining a wider customer base.

Thanks again for engaging in this conversation—I really appreciate it. Looking forward to your thoughts

I received an email today from a potential Huel competitor that is launching a complete meal replacement on Friday of this week…they haven’t gone into any exact details yet but they say that it will be a shake in a 1.7kg pouch, with each meal being 100g with 30g protein, 25 vitamins and minerals, pre- and probiotics etc. and 4 different flavours.

The thing that attracted me most though, is that they say the pouch will be recyclable. They have other products already in supermarkets and are quite well established and I don’t know if the packaging will contain any plastic but when I know I’ll feed back. Some other products they sell are packaged in plastic so I am slightly skeptical.

I also don’t know if it will be a vegan product, but as outlined earlier in the thread, the fact that your products are all vegan is extremely important to me too.

So I’ll be real and I take your questions and ask for answers to make sure the right things are being communicated. I’ll do the same with this but it may take a little longer to get a response but it’s a really good question!

So of course there is no plan for this but things are always about trial and error right. We could get 2 years down the line and go maybe we need to revert back to the old form. We are confident that customers will get perfect portions with this new version of our H&S range and fingers cross everyone will get on with it. But again I don’t want to discredit the fact you raise awesome points!

Interesting, you don’t need to disclose this information but would you be able to let us know?

Understood. Of course like I said it’s not shut off and who knows what we could see in the future. We’re always moving and bending best we can so watch this space!

You mean disclose who the competitor is? I can do that, but I don’t like to promote other businesses that are in direct competition with Huel on the Huel forum, that comes across as Sneaky.
