Huel Black / Gas Issues

Hello everyone,

I have recently implemented Huel Black (unflavoured) into my diet, and I am consuming 2 scoops with 500 ml of water for lunch, 5 times a week.

As you can imagine from the title, I am experiencing gas issues - to the point where it’s becoming unsustainable. I am quite sure it’s NOT because of the high protein content (I was already on a high-protein diet), so the issue might be attributable to the fibers.

I have read several threads on this issue, and some claim that it will settle over time, but I am a bit sceptical, to be fair.

Specifically, I didn’t consume Huel on Saturday and Sunday and experienced no issues, but today, Monday, I started having the very same issues exactly 30 minutes after starting to sip!

Remedies? Have you solved it?

The Huel farts have near legendary status judging by the number of posts they have attracted over the years and yes, they do go away. As to when that would I guess depend on the amount and frequency of your Huel intake - and how quick your gut adapts to it.

A fair proportion of us have experienced the Huel farts or other stomach gas / heartburn problems when we first started. I did when I first started on Huel ‘white’ original flavour years ago. I lowered my portion size from 120g to 90g which helped the most at the time. After about 6 months all of the symptoms went away on their own.

I’ve had a similar adjustment period recently with raisins. In an attempt to increase my fruit intake, I’ve started eating raisins daily. Initially I gobbled 30g (which is the NHS recommended portion size) in one go but this lead to loose bowels which is not something I usually experience. I started spreading the servings out across the day, eating 7-8g portions 3-4 times a day. After a few months it seems my body has now adjusted and I can gulp 30g in one go without an issue.

Thank you for the quick response.

As mentioned, I am taking 90 g / daily.

What should I expect in terms of adaption? Like, how long is it likely I’ll have to wait until the body adjusts?

Are there any temporary remedies before the body adjusts to the new diet?

Reducing the portion sizes and/or splitting a portion into 2 smaller portions spaced apart in the day would help, albeit be less convenient in the short term.

Thank you. I’ll try that, although I am a bit sceptical.

My scepticism comes from the fact that after just 3 sips of Huel I start having gas issues.

To be fair it’s best to be sceptical of anything @Coup says here. He has form.

Coming back to this thread:

I have noticed some benefits from preparing Huel the night before and refrigerate. Also, drinking a bit more water during the day seems to help.

However, I have also noticed that if I combine it with some specific type of foods (i.e., ground beef), it’s absolutely unsustainable, and the situation even get worse!

I’ll give the product at least one additional week, otherwise I’ll have to discontinue.
