Huel continues to get worse.
The only product that’s still great is the protein powder.

Hey mbs, I think you’re missing something:
“Prices overall rose by 15.7% between September 2021 and September 2023, with food and drink prices increasing by 28.4%.”
(Larry Elliot, Economics Editor, The Guardian, 14th August 2024)
I just calculated that between September 2021 and September 2023 the price of my 10 bags of Huel v3 increased by 14.55%.
That’s a big increase in value during the cost of living crisis, and any adjustments to the product should really be seen in that context.
PS It’s maybe worth mentioning that Essential actually got 10% cheaper during 2023. To me that means it got better. ![]()
Is that another celebrity endorsement from Steven Bartlett’s alter ego?
I’ve just had a delivery of the new version.
Got chocolate and strawberries and cream and if im honest i think it tastes better. The consistency seems slightly thinner so i may tweak the amount of liquid used.
End of the day everything is going up in price so its only normal that huel would too. The majority of black edition has stayed at 28.50, before discount ofc, thats the only price I’ve known, considering how sharply everything else has risen, theyve done quite well. And i bet youd still save money overall compared to buying all the crap, meal deals etc if you didnt use huel.
C&C used to be my 2nd favourite flavour but having just tried the new version for the first time I’ll never be ordering it again. Really disappointed in how much worse that is in terms of taste. The old one was so good, pah ![]()
Agree, i used to like it as didn’t taste as sweet but now its just poor.
Smells like sugar!
Not sure what Huel was thinking as it was without doubt best one.
Strawberry and Cream has now replaced it. Dont think ill order it again.
They switched their chocolate sourcing to Tony’s Chocolonely. While they have a good ethics / fair trade USP (just don’t dig too deeply into that) – the product taste seems to have generally poor to middling reviews of the unflavoured chocolates given the cost. Many users describing it, amongst many things, as tasting soapy or like a mediocre / cheap own brand chocolate and excessively sweetened.
Nothing I’ve read has inspired me to want to try this version.
Having said that, whenever Huel tweaks something, there’s always a massive backlash and people complaining about it being a downgrade.
sometimes without even being customers and/or users of the products ![]()
Lol especially that. But that’s par for the course. But even hardcore users of the product.
Yes, people don’t like change. The problem is that change often has to happen for very real reasons – supply chain issues, raw materials/infrastructure/logistics costs, regulation changes, market trend demands etc. but these often get tarred with the same brush as changes that don’t really make any perceived sound logical sense. Every brand does it, it’s just that - thanks to New Coke – most don’t tell you they are doing it.
Oh yes I am fully aware of that, and often products are improved as a result. It’s often cost cutting that results in a slightly inferior product tho. Unfortunately the current economic is challenging for many
How do black and white compare in the new editions, regarding smoothness, solubility, thickness, texture? Smoother and better solubility compared to the previous edition, or worse?
Has anyony tried v1.2 yet?
Thanks for that Philip, some nice comments there.
Ultimately brands are free to change anything they wish but when comes to food taste is one of the main drivers. If something tastes worse than before people just won’t buy it. Thats reality.
Had a couple of them now since my post, its not as bad as i thought but still worse than the original product so there is still a downgrade.
I know you like sticking up for huel quite a bit but they need to know if people dont like their products after a change, dont take it to heart.
I find black edition is decent and smooth when i shake it by hand but i always put in fridge.
White edition and following the same thing always feels gloopy but still decent just different.
I also feel black edition fulls me up more for some reason.
No – it’s absolutely fine – taste is such a subjective thing and TBH – I never really understood the need for a chocolate powder as its one of those very divisive ingredients and people generally have very different interpretations of what chocolate ‘is’ whether it be the very sweetened Mars bar kind of taste or the very earthy and bitter taste of what chocolate actually is. It’s got to be easier as a customer to buy either the vanilla or original powders (depending on your sweetness preferences) then add a scoop of your favourite chocolate or cocoa powder into it. For sure – repeat sales metrics will certainly determine if people like it or not and determine its future.
Smooth as the RTDs, or more thick? Do you have the comparison?
Texture is extremely important to me. And it also affects satiety, at least that is my impression.
Thanks!
Just jumping onto this thread as I tried C&C 1.2 for the first time and I agree with it tasting a little… gone off?
Did you ever find out if there was a bad batch or something, or is this just the new flavour?
I emailed the Huel team address and they switched it for bags of Chocolate 1.2.
I never heard back about if there was an actual issue with the bags, or if as you say it’s just how it tastes now.
Chocolate 1.2 tastes sort of near enough to C&C for me that I haven’t ‘risked’ getting it again, just sticking with Chocolate.
Out of interest what was the Best before date on your bag? Mine was 8-2025.
Interesting! Same date here, 8-2025, so batch theory is possible… I’ll probably do the same as you and stick to chocolate in the future as well though ![]()
