I know you replied in that thread as well so you must have seen this suggestion, but you can have a similar level of convenience with the powder at a much lower cost per meal by taking the powder to work in a reusable tub and filling the shaker with tap water. I’ve done this for years, and it works out to about £1.10 a meal instead of £3 to £3.50 for an RTD. If you had one RTD a day at work, this would save you around £40 a month.
The powder isnt the same and I only go into work once a week which is why the RTD is the better option as it easily fits into my work bag. The rest of the days I use H&S
For those that are saying the increase is too much, I just researched the best alternatives and found that they were either the same or more expensive. I was only looking at powders as everything else Huel offers is a luxury imo.
RTD - never us it. Sure it might taste better but if you’re concerned about price, the powder is good enough.
Bars - never buy them. Far too expensive, far cheaper snacks out there and if you really want a snack type of thing. Maybe you can look into making your own Huel bars?
H&S - I use sparingly. I could eat 3-4 a day but will limit myself to one and even then not every day as a frozen ready meal can be cheaper (and no way near as nutritious)
When I used to travel by public transport, I’d take a bag and shaker into work so I could make a Huel as and when I wanted and not have to transport it every day. I did have the luxury of a kitchen to wash my shaker.
can you let us in in a bit more detail to your research?
I know that you cannot 100% replace Huel with cheaper alternatives - it would be suprising, but the best alternatives would probably be cheaper based on what I saw.
The amount of times ive left a shaker in my bag and forgot it was there. When i would find it the smell was retching
I’d rather not mention other products on Huel’s forums as it’s not cricket.
I did a search for something like uk alternatives to Huel and found a couple of articles with suggestions. Looked at the products and the prices per portion worked out similar if not more than Huel. That’s without even looking at the nutritional profile.
There was one that offered a huge discount (over half price) and I worked at the full price rather than the discount
Oh boy, that sucks! Reminds me of when I gave my aunt a lift after a shopping trip and her milk leaked in my car (she never told me). My car stank for months!
fair enough, but they do quite a good comparison on the competition too (even if outdated), eg.:
Anyways, let’s just say that with a naturally different ingredient profile, prices are usually cheaper / 400kcal for at least three options I’ve found.
I’m not saying I’ll switch (heck, I’ve just ordered more) but this increase is an eye opener to look around. And maybe bounce back to Huel after all.
I didn’t look at Jimmy Joy because they are shipping from mainland Europe and I’m concerned about Brexit issues. I did ask them about six months ago if they know if customs would charge and they didn’t answer.
I did look at the current range and the 20g protein is a deal breaker for me, I use BE so that’s half the protein (I prefer more protein because of hunger levels)
they also use soy which I’d rather avoid.
it’s just one example, but the options are definitely there at a better price in a lot of cases. In other cases, Huel may be the only good solution. I love my Salted Caramel Black, so i’m not really serious about switching.
I see. There probably are more. I found the ones that offer like for like in nutrition seem to be similar or more expensive.
I suppose if you want a cheaper meal, there are other products and if you want like for like, you will need to pay for it
Thanks Tim! I’m going into community mental health (no more shift work!!), and will be retraining as a mental health nurse soon. Luckily I’ve got a good order of RTD and bars that will last me a while! After they’ve run out I’ll have a better idea of my new budget and can figure things out. For me, the powder is still good value for what it is. I can’t think of anything so convenient and healthy at the price. Obviously nothing beats rice and beans, but I’m paying for the convenience. I might have to rethink the other products or just use them less though.
Gutted. I get why prices have to increase, but as someone who thought Huel was an expensive luxury that could only be bought every so often when feeling flush, I guess it’s now off the list completely.
I guess everyone has their own idea of what’s “affordable”.
You’re not in the minority. Those of us who understand and fully intend to continue using Huel because it’s a great product and suits us have just not contributed to this thread.
I think I’d rather cut down on something other than Huel if necessary. It’s healthy and convenient and I’m not going to stop using it.
that’s very bad news. I’ve really loved using Huel over the last 3 years but I’m afraid I will have to look for something else. I appreciate the transparency of the team but to be honest now you need to take out the word “convenient” from the website
That’s a very good point well made
“I don’t like the term ‘meal replacement’ because it makes Huel sound like an inferior alternative where Huel is superior to a typical meal. You’d never use the term ‘meal replacement’ to describe a hamburger and chips. We just call ourselves ‘food’.”
Ready to Drink (RTD) - My opinion, excluding a home prepped meal - There is NOTHING on the market that offers a product or solution that is better value in the convenience sector, at just over £3 or £3.50 retail - for a consistent, tasty, healthy, quick, complete single serving of 400 calories.
Visualize what 400 calories looks like nice pics, then try and find the nutritional value in something that is ‘ready to go’ and train, car, plane, office, uniform/suit safe, can get dragged round for days/weeks with no need for temperature control
Huel RTD is a fair price, its cheaper than a fancy high-street coffee! This increase will make no difference to my weekly consumption of 10-15 bottles
Now consider those of use who eat 2000kcal or more of Huel every day.
