I’ve tried Huel a number of times, and frequently experience nausea afterwards. Several years ago, I tried Huel Essential - I got through a bag or two, and then stopped after I began to experience nausea. Since then, assuming that the sucralose might have been the cause, I’ve recently started using the unflavored/unsweetened Huel Powder. However, I’ve encountered the same problem - I was generally okay for about a month with ~800 calories of Huel per day, but now I’ve started experiencing nausea basically every time I have it. I think it’s partially psychological, as even the scent of Huel can make me feel a little nauseous, but I wonder if there’s something else as the root cause.
None of the ingredients seem particularly concerning to me. The only ingredient/nutrient that seemed like it could potentially cause nausea even when eaten with food is pre-formed vitamin A (Retinyl Acetate). Of course, Huel Powder only includes 20% DV of vitamin A, but I wonder if the potentially rapid absorption of vitamin A when in emulsified form (wikipedia for “hypervitaminosis A” says: “Water-miscible, emulsified and solid forms of vitamin A supplements are more toxic than oil-based supplements.”) could increase the risk of nausea. I know this is probably an unlikely explanation since acute toxicity usually only occurs at high doses, but I’m wondering if anyone has looked into whether rates of absorption or simply individual differences in sensitivity/tolerance might be a concern. This is also an ingredient that is entirely absent in my usual vegan diet (since vegan sources only include provitamin A/carotenoids, not preformed vitamin A).
Of course, there could be any number of other possible causes, including something psychological. But I don’t think the cause is the commonly cited “changing to a high fiber diet” issue as I’ve had periods of several weeks using Huel with no issues, and I’ve also been vegan for ~10 years and have had plenty of fiber in my diet with or without Huel.
