I’m a Huel Black subscriber in Japan, and I just received the email about the new packaging and serving size.
I’m a little confused about the reasoning behind this change.
I use Huel as a meal replacement, usually twice a day. The previous version (400 kcal per serving, 17 servings, 1.53 kg) worked perfectly for me.
The new version will be:
20 servings
250 kcal per serving
1.08 kg per bag
I understand that some people prefer a 250 kcal serving, but couldn’t the same flexibility have been achieved simply by including a smaller scoop while keeping the larger bag?
If someone wants 250 kcal, they can always use less powder. But users like me who regularly consume around 400 kcal per meal will now go through each bag much faster.
I’m also wondering:
Is this change mainly based on customer feedback in Japan?
For people using Huel as a full meal replacement, do you see this as an improvement?
I don’t think they’re trying to make everyone diet
My main question is why they reduced the bag size instead of simply including a smaller scoop.
I don’t mind having a 250 kcal serving as an option. But for those of us who use Huel as a meal replacement, the previous 400 kcal serving worked perfectly. Now, with the smaller 1.08 kg bag, we’ll simply go through each bag much faster.
To me, it feels like Huel Black is shifting from being a meal replacement to more of a snack or light meal
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to explain your thoughts.
I completely understand why you’d ask that, especially if you’ve built your routine around 400 kcal meals.
Just to reassure you, Huel Black isn’t moving away from being a meal replacement. The formulation hasn’t changed at all, it’s the same product, just in a different pouch with a recommended serving size of 250 kcal. If 400 kcal works for you, you can absolutely continue making your meals that size by using more powder.
On the bag size, I completely understand why you’d ask why we didn’t simply keep the larger bag and include a smaller scoop. The decision wasn’t just about the scoop, it was to move to a smaller pouch format that better aligns with local preferences in Japan. I don’t have any further detail on the product development decisions beyond what’s already been shared, so I can’t really comment beyond that.
One of the other key changes is that Huel Black will now be produced locally in Japan. While this is more expensive than producing it in the UK and shipping it over, it should provide a much more reliable supply, which has been a challenge for customers in Japan previously.
I really appreciate you sharing your perspective though, and I’ll make sure your feedback is passed back to the team.
