Bloated feeling and excessive stool experiences

Hello.

Been using Huel for about three weeks now, started on the white then am on the black now.

I have two shakes a day one for breakfast, one for lunch. Shakes are two scoops each, I use 150ml plant based milk and fill to 500ml with water and have a scoop of peanut butter in each.

I have a healthy meal in the evening and fruit and occasionally a protein bar in the day. I always am about 2000 calories or under religiously every day using the myfitnesspal app. I drink 500ml water a day

Love the energy huel gives me and started it to lose weight and be more healthy. I was warned about the flatulence but OMG! It’s almost constant. The shakes feel me up and I am hungry at the right times but I do feel bloated alot of the time. My stool is very thick and hurts sometimes giving me piles. I have actually put on weight as well only a pound though.

Sorry if this a little too personal but wanted some advice of why I’m always bloated and is the passing of my stool is so excessive and it shouldn’t hurt! I would of thought I would of seen some weight loss too since I have cut my calories by at least 500.

Thanks in advance

I’m not sure about the bloating. It could be from not having enough water or from drinking it too fast. Someone else will have to give their opinion.

However, I can comment on the stools bit. I take psyllium husk supplements and they’re great at helping me poo. It’s a fibre supplement and once it’s in your stomach, it expands up to 10x and helps bind everything together. I take 1 capsule + a glass of water with every meal. I get mine from Holland & Barrett. Trust me, it’s a game changer!

You should definitely be aiming to drink much more than 500ml of water per day!!

Thank you for your reply, how much more water? I thought 500ml was quite a lot!

Someone with much more knowledge than me will be along soon but I think at least 2 litres. More if you are exercising.

Thank you for the reply. I will have a look into psyllium husk. I know my body must be thinking what are you doing? So its natural to experience different effects I suppose!

Thank you, will definitely take this on board, I literally will be passing through the toilet constantly. Whatever I drink it almost just goes through me!

yep that is a reasonable amont

Nope, far from it.

I would just try more water first. In my opinion (I’m not a professional - you may be better asking @JamesCollier) you don’t really want to start on laxatives…even if they are natural ones; there is plenty of fibre in Huel. I think water intake is possibly an issue here.

Psyllium husk is a supplement, not a laxative. It’s not bad for you either. It makes a big difference to the way you poo. The clean wipes alone are worth it.

Edit: Perhaps this is worth a read.

I was just researching that and didnt want to go too far with the laxative for now, I will up my water intake. I can imagine 1000ml of huel in my body with only 500ml of water isnt a good mix!

Will persevere with it!

No, laxatives can make your bowels lazy. I have only once in my life suffered from constipation, on one day 2 years ago and I could give a really graphic story about it…and I assume it was due to a hot day and not drinking much fluid. It was unpleasant in the extreme, so I do feel for people who suffer regularly.

Will look into both, thank you, food for thought!

I know this isnt a health forum but i’m drinking more water already and literally its passing through me. I drink 500 ml and have to wee about at least 5 times in an hour and it gives me a headache!

Has anyone had this e experience before?

How old are you? After I passed 40 I noticed water comes out almost faster than I can drink it. I hope it’s doing me some good during the few seconds its inside me.

I am 42, yes i am told that water is food for you but atm it just gives me a headache and makes me wee excessively. Also with reference to the start of this feed I poo regurlay and very little so kinda like constipation but I little and often

Sorry for the spelling mistakes, texting too fast and not checking before sending!

One thing to consider is that your body by default will always do its utmost to maintain a good level of hydration as it can’t survive long without water. If you haven’t been drinking enough it will hang on to water reserves which will cause bloating and weight gain. It’s quite possible for body weight to fluctuate by several pounds due entirely to this, independent of calorie intake.

As soon as you up your water intake it will start to release the water reserves as there is clearly now a good supply coming in. This will result in you feeling like you are spending your life in the bathroom until your water levels are rebalanced.

Stick with it for a few days and you should find the bloating goes away, weight decreases and your frequency of bathroom visits goes back to something more normal.

It’s also why if you weigh yourself after a night on the booze you can look like you’ve gained 4 or 5 pounds. Alcohol is dehydrating so your body can go into panic mode and hang onto loads of water to counteract this. It usually disappears within a couple of days.

Basically our bodies are exceptionally good at maintaining equilibrium and ensuring survival :slightly_smiling_face:

@David I thought you were in your early 20s, do with that information what you will

You’re not totally wrong. For a while, when I was younger, I actually was in my early 20s.

Thank you for your reply and well described theory. I havent replied because u was probably on the toilet! Lol

Before starting Huel it was a novelty for me to drink any water in the day so now I have just gone to drinking 2000ml a day, so obviously my body has something to say about it!

Will stick at it and await the results!
