yes - the second increase in 8 years - on average the two increases account for an average annual inflationary increase of around 3% if you use any inflation calculator you will see from the launch price to the current price, the price point is almost exactly where it should be.
Where it should be?
Should 400 calories, consisting of mainly oats, cost £1.63.
5kg of oats is £11 from the first website I checked.
If huel is over 50% oats that means the cost for over half of a huel serving is about 10pence.
That is normal pricing what you and I would pay. Now huge bulk buy which huel will do means it will be a lot less, probably 3 pence. The rest of the Ingredients are obviously in smaller amounts and aren’t expensive meaning Huel works on a huge profit margin already… as shown in their accounts
The point being, Huel has seemingly chucked it’s mission statement out the window by adding on a £2 price increase per bag for a new flavour. If the goal is to provide affordable food, this goes directly against that. I don’t see how that can be disputed
The phrase ‘affordable food’ is kind of meaningless, literally. What’s easily affordable to one will be absolutely out of reach to another.
What does Huel mean by ‘affordable’? I hope it’s that they intend provide a product at a fair price which will be accessible to a large majority of people, ie most of us, even all but the very poorest. I hope they’re making as much effort to keep prices down as they are in developing new flavours which cost extra. I hope Huel sees a future in providing healthy vegan nutrition to the masses, not just the affluent.
But pricing must be tricky. The concept of ‘reassuringly expensive’ is pernicious and especially so for lifestyle products. It’d be good to see Huel improving affordability as much as variety.
Affordable food ![]()
As much as I used to love eating sausages – I always tried to mentally block out what was in them. As far as these ones go – 53% ‘pork’ content isn’t bad and way more than 42% that legally has to be in them. If they don’t label them as pork then they need only contain 32% mystery meat. ![]()
Haha was only an example of affordable food, im a butcher man when it comes to sosij.
oddly, back when Huel started out those same sausages in Tesco were 60p - now they’re 80p! thats a 33% increase! outrageous! etc etc ![]()
Haha!! I admire that you know that! ![]()
fun Tesco sausage fact - Tesco were also the chain finally identified as the infamous ‘Supermarket X’ for ‘unintentionally’ selling sausages back around the same time - infected with Hepatitis E. I recently read a report - I think in the MEN - saying that a weekly shop of the exact same range of items in Tesco had increased by 17.9% in the last two years alone. Every little helps ![]()
I await you know whos answer!!! Lol
yeah - well, im done with this particular thread, theres nothing more to be said that hasn’t been said already ![]()
I was thinking about the whole beaver anal gland thing. Just who found out it was great source of vanilla flavouring? Was it a lonely old hillbilly having sexy time with a beaver and found it out during his endeavours. I mean you wouldn’t just express the castor sacs by accident.
And then he’s gotta explain it to Me Whippy.
Hey fella, I’ve got this great new product that will taste great in your soft serve vanilla ice cream. I’d go so far to say it’s the dog’s bollocks…or the beaver’s butt.
I expect the newest dragon Steven Bartlett would have invested in it if Dragons Den existed back then.
That’s the most sense this thread has seen for a while.
I was just trying to prove @Phil_C wrong.
I’ve taken note of this. Since I hadn’t mentioned the price of new products in forum posts before I didn’t mention the cost here. I really hate the idea that you think I’ve stuck it in to get it past you as this wasn’t the case so in future I will add the price in to my forum posts. I will need to have a think about what pricing I put in - subscription/single purchase, 2 pouches/bulk purchase, do I include the costs for all regions? These are the reasons why I’ve always left it out, but will work out the best way to do this.
I would try and mention it in more broad terms otherwise you’ll end up getting buried. If a future flavour is roughly £2 a bag more/less to the majority of the flavours state that but check the website for accurate pricing depending on your ordering model.
Thanks Tim.
I agree with Coup: it didn’t need specific pricing info - just something like “this new flavour costs more to produce, so is a bit more expensive than all the others.” …something along those lines, just so we’d know what to expect. ![]()
and that you’re thinking of us. ![]()
Do you plan to release more “premium” flavours?
Also to your point about not saying anything about the price increase because you hadn’t said it about other new products
Huel black is not a new product, it’s an older product with a set price for all flavours. You did not release a new product, you released a new flavour, which since the start of huel in 2015 have always been the same price. This one you increased the price and didn’t say a word, that is sneaky, and isn’t right
I see you’re auditioning to join coups fanatical huel defense league
