I got the taste sampler and tried them all. I’ve also had a couple of bags of vanilla - they were all both too sweet and had a synthetic edge which lingers in the mouth. It’s weird because I have sweetened stuff all the time and like diet drinks but none have the overpowering sweetness of flavoured Huel. The bags of Vanilla Huel I passed on to a friend, he couldn’t eat them either - eventually we couldn’t find anyone who could eat them and put them in the bin. Even my children for home Sugar is a way of life said they tasted like “chemicals” (as my eight year old put it). When I read people say they’re just right all I can conclude is they have very low sensitivity to sweetness
my first bag of vanilla tasted extremely sweet and chemically for the first day, with a lingering aftertaste that I didn’t like. One week later and I can’t taste it anymore, adding the flavours either through the boosts or through the MyProtein FlavDrops that I’m using just make it taste like milkshakes now, definitely not overly sweet. Ok the texture could be better but I look forward to them now
I use Pineapple & Coconut, Strawberry, Banana (Favourite), and Rhubarb and Custard. I mix with Vanilla.
I personally like the sweetness, I like the artificial taste and actually add a level teaspoon of power to my three scoop meals.
I’m also terrible for licking the spoon afterwards, and succumb to a blast of sweetness that can sometimes knock me back. Love it.
Only tried the chocolate with the unsweetened/unflavoured. Even using 2 heaped spoonfuls, I couldn’t taste anything remotely chocolatey or enjoyable when used with 122g of Huel.
I’m currently using 122g of Huel with half a scoop of My Protein Chocolate Stevia Whey and 10drops of their chocolate flavdrops. Still doesn’t taste enjoyable but it’s happily drinkable. I think it’s going to take a huge amount of something strong to overcome the taste of the U/U.
Can only comment on the Vanilla Huel and flavour boosts.
I think they all work well but depends on how heavy you are with the spoon. I use a micro spoon (something like you’d see in a lab) and put a small amount in.
Works for me.
Lick the end of the spoon too
I use the flavour packs with unsweetened and find them perfect. I found the vanilla huel far too sweet already so my remaining bag of that is mixed with pure cocoa powder to remove that edge.
What I would like to see are some savoury flavours, although I concede there may be issues with that.
Edit: important to note I consume Huel cold which massively helps with the flavouring for me.
Hi, I’m a newish Hueler and just trying out the flavour samples for the first time.
I’ve tried banana with 1 1/2 scoops of UU. The flavour seemed like a weak after taste, and very artificial tasting. I think the sweetner level was ok, but mostly that was all I could taste. If I added enough to taste the banana I’m sure it would be too sweet.
I’m not sure yet if I like stevia as a sweetner. Not to keen on the taste of sweeteners in general. I might have to stick with fruit or real sugars for sweetening.
I’m trying the chocolate in 2 scoops UU and 1 vanilla, as I type. I mixed it up this morning and had a sip then. Is it my imagination, or is it less sweet if left a while? Either way, it’s too sweet and lacking flavour. Can’t imagine mixing it with pure Vanilla.
So far with Huel, I’ve been experimenting with UU/vanilla mix, and with adding fruit, milk, and flavourings in varying amounts, such that I haven’t got a set routine with it. But for reference, the most common mixes I do are either; 2:1 UU/V with a shot of espresso, 1 1/2 tsp cocoa powder, 200ml whole milk; or 3 UU, shot of espresso, 1 1/2 tsp cocoa powder, 60ish grams frozen banana.
It is a bit of a faff messing with those ingredients of a morning, so would like to find a flavour system option that would work for me. It’s less of a chore when I use Huel to replace an evening meal.
Really love banana with unsweetened (3 g / 50 g). Was maybe too sweet, but it was a bit of a test.
Toffee with unsweetened (3 g / ~50 g) was just about right. Not too sweet but still getting toffee.
Custard and Rhubarb with vanilla (3 g / 100 g) tasted just about the same as vanilla to me. Shame because I really like custard.
Custard and Rhubarb with unsweetened (3 g / 100 g) tasted sweeter than unsweetened but that’s about it.
Chocolate with unsweetened (3 g / 50 g) porridge was pretty good.
I’m definitely leaning towards having the flavour boosts with UU, but I got two packs of samples to test it out with both.
Banana is the best I’ve tried so far. Tastes like a banana paddle pop. I’ve just committed to buying a pack.
Perfect! ( chocolate flavour)
I like the fact you don’t need a lot. I just wish you sold bigger pouches are they are a bit pricey…
I tried the strawberry with vanilla huel (3 scoops 500ml) found the taste incredibly artificial and far too sweet. I probably added 1/4 of a teaspoon.
In getting on well with the cacao flavour when I add a handful of frozen raspberries (again 3scoops vanilla huel and 1/4 teaspoon)
Haven’t yet tried the rest of the flavour packs.
I tried some of the flavours from the tester pack:
Banana, Chocolate, Cocao: For me, they were all too sweet, and artificially sweet at that. You can tell it’s sweetener, even if it is natural Stevia flavouring. I would genuinely rather have a bit of sugar, that badly done artificial sweetener. This was in unflavoured/unsweetened Huel too!
Two scoops of vanilla
1 scoop of unsweetened
1/2 tsp of flavour
= Perfect
Ps Twice a day.
Hi,
I have 3 scoops unsweetened
1 teaspoon mint
1 teaspoon cocoa
I wouldnt want it any sweeter
I’d also be interested to know if there could be a flavour boost with sugar instead of sweetener. But maybe you couldnt taste any sweetness at all then?
On the topic of sugar instead of Stevia or Sucralose; the latter being 600 times sweeter than sugar, it would require a large amount to produce the same results. I am not sure how Stevia compares to sugar though, someone else might have a number on this.
You could use sugar and add for example cacao yourself I suppose
I find them much too sweet (in new vanilla), and dislike the taste of stevia.
My experience has been opposite to the above - I’m a new customer & have only ever tried new vanilla, which I find too bland on its own & definitely not too sweet for me. I don’t mind this however & prefer to add my own flavourings & adjust the sweetness myself anyway.
Should also be mentioned that I have been a smoker for 20 years & I generally prefer strong flavours in food & drink, perhaps because my tastebuds have been dulled by my habit…
With this in mind, the only flavour boost I’ve tried so far is cacao (I got the 8 pack sampler) & even in new vanilla at half the suggested concentration - a 1.5 scoop shake, which is the suggested amount for the flavour boost used with U/U - the cacao flavour was very subtle to me, so much so that I added more cocoa powder of my own. It was tasty with the cacao boost, but I like a stronger flavour & the big sachets of flavour boost are so expensive compared to adding your own cocoa, it just doesn’t make sense to me to buy them.
I appreciate I’m probably in the minority here though, as most comments I’ve read say the flavour boosts are too sweet & strong… I didn’t find that at all but based only on the one I’ve tried so far, I wouldn’t buy them again & much prefer adding things myself… This view may change when I get round to opening the U/U from my order tho!
Ive tried them and chocolate the best. Banana tastes overly fake but to be honest they all tatse too fake and sweet so ill stick to adding real bananas and food to flavour
So far I’ve tried vanilla on its own, rhubarb and custard, and matcha and they are all too sweet for me all I can taste is chemicals and not any of the flavouring. I’m really wishing I’d ordered a pack of unsweetened to try as well as the vanilla, as I seem to be having a bad reaction to the sweetener.
Maltodextrose no thank you…
What’s your reason for rejecting the Flavour Boosts due to maltodextrin? As far as I am aware, the negative reputation for maltodextrin is because it is a fast acting carbohydrate like sugar and really should be included in carbohydrate that sugars, not just total carbohydrate in nutritional labelling – this is why we don’t use it in our Huel Powder, like many powdered food brands, but rely on oats instead. But with our Flavour Boosts the amount you add to Huel is tiny – 2-4% – so likely has very little effect on carbohydrate metabolism.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts.
