Frequent urination

In a perfect world sure. But there are more factors than just the PP5 testing environment. Temperature, time, content combinations, production, ect.

But I will not dismiss the notion that the opposite of the above also could be true, and the causation should be found elsewhere.

There was nothing wrong with the berries btw. They even got cooked before usage, just in case of bacteria.

I have the same issue! I started having Huel last year as soon as I started working from home since Iā€™m too lazy to cook (my company offered us free lunch/dinner when we were in the office so I didnā€™t need Huel before). Thatā€™s when I started having these frequent urination issues. Iā€™ve seen a few doctors about it and nothing they suggested actually fixed the issue. Until it suddenly stopped. And then it returned. What Iā€™m noticing now, by matching my appointment dates&notes with the dates I got Huel, is that it only happened while I was having Huel. My doctors and I thought it was because of coffee, but even after stopping drinking coffee the issue didnā€™t go away (although coffee is indeed one of the culprits in my case - just not the only one). So, at least for me, after seeing this post, Iā€™m almost confident Huel is the cause.

I am also having this problem of frequent urination.
Of those people that have experienced it, has it got better as your body has adapted to a new diet?
I drive a lorry for a living and the problem is affecting my work as I have to stop so often. If the problem doesnā€™t resolve itself I am going to have to give up Huel which would be a shame as I have definitely noticed benefits.

Sorry to hear this, Graham. I appreciate that isnā€™t ideal in your line of work. What else are you drinking alongside your Huel? It might be a case of just reducing the amount of additional water or caffeinated drinks.

Thanks for the reply Tim.
I am still drinking the same as I was before I started on Huel, including the same amount of coffee (1 or 2 cups before work and the container I take to work with me). The only difference is my change from instant coffee to filter coffee.
I might actually be drinking less water now.

If this is just a short term condition that will improve then I will get by for now but I canā€™t continue like this long term.

This is interesting. Filter coffee has a lot more caffeine in general than instant. Obviously the amount depends on loads of factors, like brewtime and roast, but in general a filter coffee has more caffeine in. This might be playing a part. We have an article here with some rough guidance for caffeine.

I realise this isnā€™t filter coffee, this is an americano, but you can see the stark difference of ranges.

You shouldnā€™t reduce your additional water intake down entirely, you need to drink water alongside Huel as the high fibre in Huel is a sponge for it. But reducing down your water a little will help and perhaps only having one cup of filter.

Let us know how you get along.

Thanks again for the reply Tim.
Looking at this info I think I will try going back to instant coffee for the time being and see how that goes.
Iā€™ll let you know in a week or so the result.

I wonder if itā€™s the low carb / high protein effect?

I once tried a high protein low carb diet and had the same issue with needing to pee every hour practically and thatā€™s where I am now. This is why people lose so much weight at first on these diets but itā€™s mainly fluid.

However since thereā€™s a nutritionist on this thread Iā€™m sure heā€™d know about that.

I am definitely drinking more fluids besides the huel - Iā€™ve been told as part of my training nutritional advice that if I am thirsty Iā€™m already dehydrated and I need to prevent that to train effectively. Iā€™m definitely thirstier on huel for whatever reason :woman_shrugging:t2:

Iā€™ve tried my sonā€™s powered Huel in the past with no issues whatsoever using only 1 scoop at a time.

I ordered a monthā€™s supply for myself recently and decided to do a double scoop of powder today (the actual serving size).

Of course, within probably 20 minutes of having that Huel, I started to have frequent and excessive urination that lasted about 3.5 - 4 hours. It now seems to be stopped.

I found the following from a quick online search:

Does too much protein make you urinate?

According to a 2019 review in NefrologĆa, excess waste buildup from eating too much protein also creates a much more acidic environment, causing you the urge to pee all the time. Increased acid production over time may also cause problems in the bones and liver.

Given the above, I will try again tomorrow to use only 1 scoop of Huel powder at a time. I am hoping that will solve the problem. If not, I will have to discontinue using Huel.

Hi @Nunya

Whilst the protein in Huel powders is high (which version did you have?), the amount is far from excessive and is similar to that of other high-protein meals. In a healthy person, itā€™s unlikely that the protein level is contributing to increased urination. It could be that youā€™re consuming an additional 500ml of water.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

I have the bladder of a child and constantly go if I drink too much fluid but I can have a Huel with 450ml of water for breakfast and not need to go for 3 hours and actually feel a bit dehydrated afterwards. I believe itā€™s the oats absorbing the fluid. Iā€™m fine with it, just find it interesting how it effects people differently.

May I have it when youā€™ve finished. Iā€™m feeling rather peckish?

Is it Vegan??

When I have Huel for breakfast I also donā€™t need to pee for 3-4 hours. But if I do drink something else shortly after I end up bursting for the loo. I also canā€™t drink too late now or Iā€™m up a few times in the night. So I try and not have a drink after 8pm but even then I go once in the night.

Hi all

New here and came across this threat and wanted to add. Interestingly (well it wasnā€™t at the time) I had this issue before I started Huel.

I had a log spell of constant peeing. Sometimes 10-15 times a day. Sometimes 3 lites or more. One drink or so and itā€™s become clear quick. I knew getting on trains etc was a huge risk. It was like I was permanently overhydrated.

Lockdown and elusive GPs = terrible time. I went private in the end. Tests were fine - normal functions and glucose. Just slightly low folate (hardly a surprise given I might as well tipped any drink straight down the pan!!!)

Anyway, what did precede this spell was a dietary change - without really realising it, it became relatively low calorie intake but was high in fruit, veg and oats (oats every day). I was eating chicken and fish too. Lots of blueberries and walnutsā€¦ many features of Huel I guess.

Oh - so it was about 3 months after the change that I noticed this excess pee.

So itā€™s all of this and what others are saying that made me think, could the issue be diet the change? Fat cells being burned, more fluid based diets, oats. I canā€™t see it being irritation if the issues people see has been mainly volumes/output. Irritation would usually mean frequent but without the large volumes. Colour key too. I was also drinking a lot of tea (maybe too much as it was lockdown) during this time.

Clearly we are all different in what we need fluid wise to be hydrated. It seems to me I donā€™t need lots. During the above I wasnā€™t feeling like I needed to drink. In fact I didnā€™t bloody want to!

What was also weird about the episode was that at times very cloudy. UTI checks etc, all fine. Iā€™ve noticed this after Huel.

So for me, 3 months into a change and more diligence dietary behaviour I had to basically move into the bathroom!

Sorry, long post but the contextā€¦

Thanks
Richard

To get 2000kcal you have to consume 5x400ml water, which is 2 liters. If you drink water and coffee and maybe even some coke in addition youā€™re getting many liters of fluid every day, so frequent urination is normal - everything else would be alarming.

(I admit that I still havenā€™t figured out how much one may/should drink in addtion; my problem is that I am always thirsty, that I really drink a lot)

Iā€™ve been struggling too. Started taking huel and found myself urinating a lot more frequently. Then Iā€™d get the urge to go and nothing would come out. Eventually it got so bad that I was told I might need a catheter. Thankfully I took a selection of supplements instead which enabled me to pass. I had lots of tests and an MRI I had inflammation of the prostate. No such issues before huel. I stopped taking huel and was put on antibiotics and a supplementary diet. It went away. Iā€™ve started huel again just over a week ago and the symptoms are coming back. Looks like huel isnā€™t for me.
