Heartburn/Indigestion on Huel

Thanks Marcus, that is really useful information. I’m going a bundle on the flavour pouches now and no heartburn I’ll just eat those cherries separately (they’re much nicer that way anyway)

I have a history of strong nsaids and saw my gp regarding the heartburn expecting to get referred for a hernia etc. Nope, I had a stomach ulcer and needed a course of strong doses of omeprozole. Often this is prescribed along with the nsaids because the nsaids wreck your stomach and the omeprozole protects it.

Try it cooled and thicker it helps

Update: I stopped taking Omeprazol completely a few months ago but have still needed to use Rennies - probably about 1 a day on average.

I was taking my Huel half Vanilla and half U/U (2 scoops of each), and would often get heartburn, indigestion and feelings of bloating during/after drinking, especially if I drank quickly or it was later in the evening.

Last week for some reason I put 3 scoops of U/U in by accident and decided to try it without any Vanilla. Felt none of the normal side affects, and was quite surprised as it was about 9pm. Since then I’ve been having 3:1 U/U:Vanilla (I tried a 2:2 split but found it now to be sickly sweet - funny how taste changes so quickly). I’ve had almost none of the normal side affects. My diet/lifestyle has remained otherwise unchanged. Planning to go 100% U/U once I’ve finished the Vanilla up. Wonder what it is about the flavouring/sweetener in the Vanilla…

I’ve found the closer I get to 14 stone (at 5ft8, 14 stone means a very fat and solid belly), the greater my chances of heartburn from Huel. There’s no issue with regular food at that weight, so I guess the added fat gut pressure has an easier time forcing the water and powder mixture upwards.

At my current 13 stone 5 (after dieting for just over a month), heartburn isn’t a concern.

I too have a hiatal hernia and gerd. I went to the doctor for gerd when I was about 15 or 16 and was prescribed dexilant. The doctor didn’t even do any research on me, I just told him I had heartburn and he prescribed the meds, no follow up, no questions about my diet, nothing. Turns out my grandpa, all of my uncles and my two brothers have the same problem. Grandpa and one uncle were diagnosed with hiatal hernia so I assume mine is the same thing.

I know you say you’re scared because of your uncle dying, but proton pump inhibitors aren’t the answer! Diet is everything! Your problem isn’t an excess of acid, it’s a physical problem with your stomach. You need that acid to properly digest your food and to kill unwanted bacteria. I follow a diet of the following: no nightshades (I can’t tell you why, I just know that it works) which means tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant etc. (black pepper is fine), no greasy foods and no simple sugars (ie no white bread, white rice, white sugar etc.) AND NO ALCOHOL. I soak all beans in water and an acidic medium for at least 8 hours. If I’m strict to that diet, I have no heartburn and have no need for proton pump inhibitors. If you’re taking them regularly, your stomach will produce extra acid to compensate for the lack thereof, so addiction to them is real. I’m not a doctor or a specialist, I know all of these things from my personal experience and that of my family.

If you’re taking omeprazole and still getting heartburn with huel, you have some serious reflux problems and should consider a big diet change (and getting off the proton pump inhibitors).

All this to say that recently I haven’t been strict to my diet and heartburn hasn’t been as bad but I started vanilla huel this morning, 1:5 ratio, I added coffee and a small probiotic drink and I’m having some minor heartburn. I’m going to try the UU next, maybe it will be a little better.

I don’t take proton pump inhibitors and my heartburn has been minor and short lived. You take proton pump inhibitors and your heartburn was minor and short lived. Sounds like proton pump inhibitors aren’t helping you!

You asked for thoughts and those are mine, hope to hear what you think about it.
