Hi I’ve had Huel for breaky and occasionally lunch for a week. I was planning on attempting a complete Huel month in September too. I CrossFit 3 times a week and am active during the day anyway but have recently started picking and snacking like a woman possessed. I find when ive had Huel it resets my eating habbits. Need to restore my will power!
Great! Yes I really need to work on self discipline and willpower. I’m nervous and excited for this
and I’m eating through all my stocked food like crazy to get it out of the way so I’m not tempted come September. My boyfriend said he’ll sort his own dinner out for the month to make it easy on me. Poor guy is going to be living off sandwiches!
I’m going to keep my fridge empty for September except for any flavours to add to the Huel.
For those doing the challenge, will you be using vanilla or plain Huel?
Looking forward to these…err, I mean, welcome to the forum and wishing you the best of luck.
(tries to regain composure…)
I’ve been using Vanilla up to now but sometimes it gives me a heartburn-like reaction, so I’ve ordered some of the unflavoured version to try.
For anyone that has any unopened dry food left over they want to get rid of, consider taking them down to a food bank
I transitioned to vegetarian a few months back and had lots of spare tuna cans.
Maca powder does go well with vanilla Huel. I find I have to be careful, though. If I have too much I get a headache.
I don’t mean rain on your parade, but do you actually know how many net (key word) calories per day your body needs to lose weight in a controlled way? (ie, 2ish pounds a week)?
It took me about 6 weeks to work out what I need through tracking everything I ate and exercised in myfitnesspal and tracking my weight.
If you don’t know what this figure is and you get it wrong, your first week on Huel only will be very tough. You also won’t know if it’s the Huel or that you simply aren’t eating enough.
As well you aren’t preparing for this very well by munching through all your current food as fast as you can. If you ever read up on fasting / juice fasting and how to prepare for one of those, you’re sorta doing the opposite!
I don’t want you to think I am being negative, just trying to make sure you realise everything you could be hit with.
I go for a max of 15g in any one day. Normally between 3g-5g per Huel serving depending on how many servings I’m having per day. I can’t say I’ve noticed headaches tbh - only if I’m really dehydrated.
That’s okay, I appreciate your input. Yes, I need to consume between 1200-1400 a day for a controlled and steady weight loss. But weight loss isn’t my only goal anyway, it’s not like I’m expecting to wake up looking like a super model by October 1st haha
As for munching through my food, I was being a little hyperbolic about that. I’m not eating my weight in food, I just meant that I’m making sure that I work through everything before September. And I’m not concerned about being hungry, I’m used to doing intermittent fasting. This isn’t really the same as a juice fast either since you’re consuming the calories your body needs to function so it isn’t going to be going into Ketosis. But I’ll be steady
Marcus, where do you think you may have left your composure? Perhaps we can help you look for it
Hi Michelle,
Great to see you have received tons of helpful feedback from the Huelers here. Thanks for the post and look forward to hearing about your progress.
From our point of view, we would not recommend you dive straight in to 100% Huel. Officially this is our stance:
We recommend that when you start your Huel diet, you first try replacing 1 meal with Huel, and then after a while (approx. 5-7 days) you could progress to replacing 2 of your daily meals (and then 3, 4, etc. if you want to go 100% Huel). This will allow your body to slowly adjust to Huel.
It is possible that when you start Huel for the first time that you will experience flatulence and irregular bowel movements, tiredness and/or cravings, depending on how healthy your diet was before. However, this will settle down as your body adjusts.
I know that many people on here did dive in straight away and had minimal problems, however everyone is different. My suggestion would be to start slow to give yourself the best chance of success.
Hope that helps and keep us posted.
Thank you everyone for your input!
I’m already consuming Huel for 1-2 meals a day so it’s not really a big deal. The only meal of the day that I look forward to is dinner as I usually cook something nice for myself and the other half, otherwise I used to just fast or eat something boring. I actually find the vanilla Huel mixed with soy milk and coco powder to be really tasty and it does fill me up for hours. The difficulty for me will be in keeping it interesting so that I don’t get bored of the limited flavour options. Other than that I’m pretty confident that I’ll be able to do this
I’ll log all my progress, including any notes on flatulence haha. Wish me luck ladies and gents.
Hi!
1st day of Huel for breakii & dinner - fine.
I added some ‘things’ to breakii shake and it didn’t taste good
Dinner just plain Vanilla Huel = YUM!
So will be going plain from now on.
Am using MFP and my cals were too low yesterday with my lunch+snack so have added more food for now but over time will make the switch to more Huel.
xx
Currently been on between one or two per weekday (Always breakfast and twice lunch on average) followed by evening meal. Going to increase to Breakfast and Lunch each weekday with occasional evening meal too.
I’ll record weight tomorrow (not going to be good) and hopefully see good progress over the month .
Also a spoonful of Coffee in breakfast one makes a nice change , I usually make mine the evening before and leave in fridge over night.
Good luck @earthlingmichelle - I’ve considered doing the same thing, so would be interested to see your progress. btw - if your username is a reference to the documentary “Earthlings” then kudos - I’m a 7 year vegan myself.
Hi Casey
It is indeed! Always great to meet another long term vegan. It’s been roughly 5/6 years for me.
You should definitely do the September challenge! The more the merrier.
I’m gonna do the September challenge and see, I will be interested to see the effects positive/negative after one month
Where is everyone doing the challenge from? Would be cool to find some local Huelsters
Keep us posted Jordan. I’m in Hertfordshire. Where are you?
UPDATE:
Just waiting on my Huel to arrive but luckily I still have some left to get me through the first week in case of any delays. I’m going to make up a shopping list for ingredients to spice it up. I was also given a pretty fancy Treadmill. Huel isn’t my only challenge for September, I’m treating it as the month to get my shit together. Wake up by 8AM, get in an hour or two of solid work in the mornings, consistently stick to working out for 20 or so mins (HIIT running and weights), taking 10 mins of my day to clean my house, 20 mins to plan and reflect…
My other half has decided he will join me in the challenge too. He doesn’t have a goal in mind and he doesn’t need to lose weight, he just thought it would be interesting to experiment with it too. I’ll see if he’s happy for me to share his progress on here, for those of you who are interested in another males perspective.
Hey Michelle, I’m from Leicester
Me and some of my Huel friends are gonna start the challenge on the 1st of September
Are we allowed to make custom Huels, (eg. bananas and peanut butter) or should be be strictly on the plain Huel?
You can do whatever you fancy! I’m norm planning on adding much other than flavours such as coffee and coco. But that may change if I feel it necessary
