Overeaters Anonymous?

It actually takes X repetition (21 is a big lie), not days
For example: if you want to build a weekly habit, it won’t take you 21 days, as you would have did it just 3 times, if it’s a thing you do 5 times a day, it take fewer than 21

neither of these are true - habits and routines are formed differently for any individual and have a lot of variables that can affect and impact how fast habits and routines change status.

here is a very simple and informative video explaining the basics.

I know how habits are formed, I’ve read several books about it, read articles, and also did it myself (I’m a very routine and habitual person - almost every day is the same for me, 9/10 out of habits). I was not implying “just do it enough time” and it becomes a habit - even though, it basically is - I know there are triggers, queues and rewards involved.
I was more pointing out that “21” was a number without any sense, it can vary from person to person, and it’s not days for sure, since a habit can be a daily habit, a weekly, monthly, etc…

Not all habits are created equal… I can start a bad habit in a moment, but good ones can take forever.

I’m not sure how it would fit either. Would it be worth talking to your dietician about Huel and how to slot it on? If they are Huel friendly of course (if not show them the door lol).
Or maybe you can ask them for this info in grams. i.e how many grams is a serving of fat
In a totally un-scientific guess, I would say
1 Huel =1 serving of fat and protein and 1/4 of your fruit and veg intake. Not sure what to do about those starches. Probably no more than 1 serving a day if you’re having Huels as well

Do you consume the H&S?

Meal-prepped some Huel H&S in a recycled salted caramel jar! Was surprised how perfectly it fit.

Living in temporary accommodation rn and realised how much of a lifesaver Huel is when you only have access to a kettle/microwave! My alternative diet of eating random crisps and peanuts lying around was awful and then I remembered I have Huel :’)

Added some broccoli for colour & feels a bit weird eating a meal without veggies. Do you guys add stuff to your Huel or do you eat it as is?

That looks great. I added a pinch of chilli powder to all 3 H&S flavours I’ve tried. A bit of extra heat is always good.

What a nifty little jar. How much Huel did you manage to fit? 1 scoop or 2?

I personally don’t add anything to my Mac & Cheeze, but occasionally add hot sauce to my grains H&S.

21 May 2023 [Plan]
I’m back! Haha. I almost forgot this lil log existed…long story short it’s been a struggle.

Recap no one asked for:
I recently got diagnosed with ADHD, and it suddenly makes sense why

  1. meal prep has always been such a challenge despite my best efforts, and also
  2. why I guess I’ve been using food/snacking for stimulation and dopamine so that was always so difficult to kick.
  3. lack of impulse control and executive function to actually stick to the plan—food seems to end up in my mouth before I even realise…
  4. never been very in tune with hunger/fullness cues
Apparently sugar makes the ADHD symptoms worse, too, so basically a double bind.

And so now I remembered I have Huel…and here we are! My plan is to have a little reset day today (Sunday), because I’ve been nonstop snacking throughout the week literally until wee hours of the night and it’s getting out of control. Thankfully I haven’t gained too much weight yet, but it’s definitely on that trajectory and interfering with my life and sleep. So my goal for incorporating Huel into my life this time isn’t so much weight loss—although I could stand to lose some body fat/recomp, it’s really to function better in life. I want to nip this in the bud before it spirals even more. I do remember how when I was Huelling more I did feel more space in life, because it made having meals+lack of dishes so much more straightforward.

And straightforward is honestly what I need right now before I manage to get meds for ADHD. Apologies for the ramble! It’s been a wild trip, but I’m really hoping Huel can help alleviate some of that executive dysfunction! :face_holding_back_tears:

Current goals:

  • Get into a better structure of eating at regular times instead of endless snacking & into the night
  • Keep it simple, reduce the cognitive load for food & prep so I can actually complete my tasks for school & work. Keep my tiny sliver of executive function for work instead of spending it trying to curb food impulses.
  • Nourish my body well & pay attention to my body & how it feels after Huel (satiation etc)
  • Discipline: Prove to myself that I can actually stick to what I put my mind to! Learn some delayed gratification, that it’s really ok not to act on every impulse and that I can actually do it.
  • Not eat until I’m uncomfortably stuffed which I tend to accidentally do before I realise

Today’s Huel plan:

  • I’m aiming for ~1600kcal (4 meals of 400kcal as an ideal state for maintenance in the future, so I’m gonna use this template as practice)
  • If all Huel, that’d be ~400g of Huel total

Meal 1: 100g Huel
Meal 2: 100g Huel Mac&Cheese
Meal 3: 100g Huel
Meal 4: 100g Huel Mac&Cheese
Extras if still hungry/peckish in between meals: 0kcal sodas, tea, coffee, broth, gum

The plan in pictures:

Fingers crossed, let’s do this! :crossed_fingers:

21 May 2023 [Executing the plan]

—Lunch, 12.57-1.11pm (1.33pm)—
One Huel (chocolate flavour) down! 3 more to go. Some thoughts/observations:

  • I was lightly hungry before the Huel, and was actually really excited to drink it. I didn’t realise how much powder 100g was, and I actually liked how thick/viscous the shake was. Felt substantial. I also liked the earthy undertones.
  • It was nice letting my mind wander drinking Huel without my phone, it reminded me of all the times I used to drink Huel in the past (while volunteering, during meetings, on the slopes when we didn’t have food so I stashed a bunch of Huel bars in my snowboarding jacket…10/10 would recommend, kept me well-fuelled and so convenient🏂 )
  • It’s honestly satiating. Since I struggle with paying attention to body cues, I tend overeat before realising and then feel guilty because I’m stuffed. Huel is satiating in a not-stuffed uncomfortable way.
  • Although mentally it still feels a little odd to have meals in liquid form, literally 400kcal and a belly full of liquid  Excited for the Huel Mac&Cheese next!
  • But for now, I like that Huel lets me just move on with life since I know that I’ve gotten a nutritious meal in and don’t have to overthink if I’m overeating, undereating, getting the proper nutrients in, the logistics of meal prepping and dishes etc. and so onto finally getting some focused work done!

—Snack, 3.29-3.40pm (4.35pm)—

  • Had 100g Huel Mac & Cheeze! Was pleasantly surprised how yummy it was, also nice to have something to chew and hot and savoury.
  • The hot water didn’t seem to soften it enough so I also microwaved it for a minute. Definitely should’ve used a bigger bowl, it thickens after a while.
  • It’s an hour after the meal and I’m a bit sleepy, and also have some urges to deviate from the plan but am able to see that it’s just habitual boredom-snacking urges. I’m not actually hungry, I just want to snack because I’m bored and tired and am used to snacking to force myself to do work. So I’ll find other ways to do it instead, and keep eating to eating. And if I’m tired, I can always take a nap or do some NSDR. There are other ways to recharge my batteries and get energised without having to rely on food and sugar!
  • While having this meal, I thought of another reason why I want to do this: to gain more food neutrality. I want food to be more about fuelling my body (gotta love the Human-Fuel thing, how apt) instead of it always being such a big deal and an overly-exciting party in my mind. I want it to, for the most part, be the quick easy stop at the gas station to enable me to get to my destination and enjoy the road trip, instead of the gas station being the main attraction & getting stuck there for days.

—Dinner, 6+pm (9.43pm)—

  • Had dinner Huel, wish it lasted longer but honestly I’m more than satiated. Sneakily had half of the allotted Mac & Cheese so it ended up being a 600kcal dinner. Was a bit worried I’d eat it all and more.
  • Absolutely crashed and had a nap after; it’s frustrating bc I keep procrastinating my work and don’t have snacks to bribe me into doing it like a kid lol.

—Nightsnack, 9.29-9.40pm—

  • Done with the rest of the Mac&Cheese! Turns out it does soften if you leave it for longer and mix it properly even without a microwave. Doesn’t taste healthy to me, I’d gladly eat this.
  • Currently feeling very satiated, but still sleepy and still haven’t gotten much work done so I’m tempted to reach for a snack to aid me through it. Sigh, compulsive eater struggles. Had the most nutritious 1600kcal spaced evenly throughout the day and still want to eat…the craving isn’t too strong though. My body feels very happily sated. Not too full, but bored enough about food to move onto the next task instead of trying to search for more.
  • Feel quite thirsty.

—Extras, til 11.30pm oops—

  • some jello & 2x coffee ice blended with almond milk
  • 2 bowls of broth
  • chewing gum
Had the urge to snack on more oranges but I’m full. That can wait til tomorrow

(12.07am) Am a bit too full, but proud of myself for calling it a day instead of continuing to snack until 5am! Went over a bit but not too bad overall, all pretty nutritious stuff.

Hey good luck! :+1:

Ran out of Huel powder, so today we’re having Huel Mac & Cheese for lunch. Was comfortably hungry before the meal; it’s 1h after now and I’m very satiated, almost a bit too full after this. The portion is surprisingly huge! Used 100g powder:320g water here. Added some spring onions and furikake for colour.

I love how we can quite literally eat Mac&Cheese not as an indulgence, but as a daily nutritious staple now :smiling_face_with_tear:

I really enjoyed reading about your experience getting back into Huel over the past couple of days. Thank you for sharing your experience and being so candid about your ADHD diagnosis. I’m really looking forward to more about your journey

Had my Huel Mac&Cheeze! Yum. Very satiating. A big bowl of a nutritious balanced 400kcal! It’s a hot day though, so part of me kinda wanted a cold tumbler of Huel instead but alas I ran out of Huel powder xD

Eating has been all over the place again and gets overwhelming with all the executive function it requires so I’m gonna keep coming back to Huel to ground me a bit. Very thankful for Huel in that regard.

Plan for today:

  • Lunch—77g Mac&Cheeze, 70g chicken breast (393kcal/36.3g protein)
  • Snack—75g Huel Caramel (300kcal)
  • Dinner—77g Mac&Cheeze, 70g chicken breast (393kcal/36.3g protein)
  • Out for movies with friend—budgeting ~500kcal

Log:

  1. Lunch! Satiating, yummy. Was a bit full from overeating & night eating yesterday but it doesn’t mean skipping meals today! Will still choose to fuel my body with nutrients to prevent overeating later & repeating the cycle
  2. Snack. Love the caramel Huel. Say hello to shaker old and new (yes, finally trying out the new shaker). Love how Huel enables me to move on with life instead of continuous snacking, although I miss the dopamine and stimulation from continuous snacking. Oh well, gotta find other ways I suppose!
  3. Dinner. Really enjoyed it! It always feels too little to my mind (because I’m used to huge portions) but honestly this portion is so much more comfortable to my stomach and honestly more than enough food. Just need to recalibrate my appetite to feel satisfied with smaller portions and that one (pretty large already) bowl, indeed is enough.
