The biggest and best Huel launch ever... Huel Hot & Savoury

@Tim_Huel I’m curious to know if you got the results of the GI test for Hot and Savory?

Sorry Ivan, still waiting!

@Dan_Huel And do you know approximately when will you have them? It’s been a while already :frowning:

No sorry, the tests had to be postponed again because of COVID. I’ll let you know when we hear any updates.

Hey Dan! I hope that all is well on your end

You’re probably overloaded with GI …however!! I’ve just been reading the Glycaemic Index (out of curiosity) and I read that per serving Huel v3.0 has a similar GI to that of sugar, raw parsnips, raw orange and so on.

I was wondering how GI and satiation work together? I gather that low/high GI doesn’t necessarily account for satiation? For me Black Edition Huel keeps my feeling satisfied for 3-5 hours :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers!
Harry

What fixed yours, if I may ask? I’ve had good luck with prokinetics, but it’s still slow and miserable trying to wean off the antacids.

Hey Harry, all good here, thanks for asking.

Hmmm, this is a strange one because it’s not true. For reference Huel v3.0 has a GI of 16, sucrose (table sugar) has a GI of 63 and a raw orange has a GI of 42.

There’s little link between the two to be honest. Black Edition might be keeping you full because it’s high in protein and fibre.

Cool! Oh yeah I was talking about the GI per serving

Ah got you. The glyceamic index is based on 50g of carbohydrate within the food, so doesn’t work per serving. What you’re interested in is the glyceamic load which takes into account serving size.

You can check out more in our article here.

Nice one! Will give it a read. Thanks Dan :v:t2:

There is also something called “Satiety Index” - this is based on the ranking of students from a study, though, which does not seem to be really objective, as there may be inter-individual variance regarding satiety. While fats lower the GI, fatty foods seem to lower satiety - or rather increase appetite. At least if combined with carbs.

Factors like temperature also seem to play a role regarding satiety. Hot drinks for example are much more satisfying than cold ones. Variety is also important - although I am still not completely sure whether a smaller or larger variety leads to a lower calorie intakte. This may also be different between indiviuals.

Satiety is a complex phenomenon - it is not only about “not being hungry” but also about emotional issues regarding food and drinks. People can feel full and still have a huge drive to eat something. Hunger and appetite are correlated in some people more than in others.

Maybe finding a way to regulate emotional needs is more helpful than looking for something that just has a lower glycemic index/load or satiety index.

I finally tried HS, in fact I tried 4 of them and its a mixed bag of feelings.

Tried 4 flavours, I loved 2 and hated 2, to the point that after 5 months I cant eat them and Mexican chilly almost made very dizzy. I love the concept of a savoury Huel food, the mixability inside of the bag its okeish. Its very easy to prep and for some people it can be a lifesaver. For me the problem its the price per meal which is quite high.

Korma (8,5/10): The best without any doubt, I usually added some butter and it was very tasty. I had problems with the flaxseed, I tried to crush them but was impossible and also the feeling of having a lot of seeds in your body that havent been chewed is strange. The flavour sometimes was plain, but with a little of salt, butter or Madras it changed completely.

Madras (8,5/10): Pretty pretty nice. Its spicy as fuck and I loved it. Also I started mixing Korma and Madras and the result was (9/10). Flavour was nice, consistency was nice, and by itself it was too hot for me but very good. Its great to mix with others. Also had problems with the flaxseed.

Tomato & Herb (very weird, first time 5/10 and after a couple of times, 2/10): First time I liked it, like a soup with “things” . But after a couple of times it started to make me dizzy and throw up, it was too bland and undercooked.specially with one of the green ingredients. Couldnt stand the flavour, there was something off and I tried to add some ingredients to change it but nothing.

Mexican Chili (2/10): The night I tried it I couldnt believe it, I couldnt even eat it, was too artificial and spicy, the flavour was strange as fuck, I asume that has to be an UK thing.

Overall, its a great product, not for me but I love the effort and innovation behind it. I imagine that the manufacturing process of HS has to be a pain in the ass and a logistic nightmare in comparison to the powders.

Its great to finally have a healthy product in a category that is one of the worsts of the food industry, the ready to eat and 1-2 mins microwave ready. The price its too high for me at 30€/kg and the flavours and calories are not as good to justify in my case buying them regularly as I do with Huel White.

Hey man! Just popped back on this and totally agree with this statement👇

and just to reinstate your point that although there are foods and drinks that keeps you feeling fuller for longer on the whole, or keep your bloody sugar levels relatively level, there are also emotional elements such as the comfort eating phenomenon that comes to mind. Of course as you say, how a persons body reacts may not be the same for the other.

Do you have a link to this study? I’d be interested to learn more. As I can only speak from personal experience and observation.

The original article was:
Holt SHA, Brand Miller JC, Petocz P. An insulin index of foods: the insulin demand generated by 1000-kJ portions of common foods. Am J Clin Nutr 66, 1264-1276

Lots of neuroendocrine peptides regulate appetite - emotions are another aspect. There are only few points that are always the same - caloric restriction leads to pathological behaviour and feelings with regard to food. The brain needs glucose to function normally - and if it doesn’t get it this leads to dysregulated emotions and other responses. If the brain (the more archaic parts of it) does not work properly for other reasons it demands glucose, too. Glucose seems to be almost as important as oxygen for it.

Food is an addictive drug - one that you cannot live without. Living without it is impossible, living with it is hell…

I think Mexican is my favourite, or maybe Thai.

I can’t do the Thai, gave it a shot but the Madras and korma mixed together 1 scoop of each is nice almost dal like had that today

Someone used one of my referrals so I’ve gone for one of each - won’t need to do any food shopping for a while!
