If Julian needs chearing up, maybe we could all dance around and declare him a “great lad” as demonstrated by Lee Mack here:
I’d just like to say I’m a fan of Dave (Gorman, not the channel) and I found the episode funny, it also piqued my interest in huel having heard about it but never really considered it anymore than that. I then noticed a Facebook advert clicked on it and ordered myself a months supply.
It’s my first day as a Huel “user” today and so far so good.
At least one new customer came from the show so I’m sure there were more than just me who bought after watching!
Weclome @sayzey and thank you for taking to write that nice comment.
I’m also a Dave Gorman fan and I watched the show - though I found the extent to which Huel was mocked was in somewhat poor taste, especially considering this negative perception of the product seemed to continue among other people I know who watched the show.
However, I guess this just served as reverse psychology as you’ve gained another new customer! I’ve previously used Joylent, but have been wanting a vegan AND gluten free powdered food to use for breakfast at university. After giving my sample a try, I think we’re onto a winner as my stomach seems to agree with it - so thank you!
I know I was surprised when I first saw that Huel was hating and trolling Soylent. I’m genuinely happy to see that it has toned down quite a bit. Like you said, startups are inherently fragile. Glad to see both Huel and Soylent have succeeded.
I was actually in the audience of this show, it was how I heard about Huel in the first place funnily enough.
I thought, “what a great idea”!
I’m a big fan of Dave Gorman, and I will say that he was a bit harsh of Huel, and did miss the point a bit with what Huel is actually about.
But, in his defence, I didn’t like Huel’s branding of its product as “the future of food”, which I’ve noticed it’s not doing it so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I like Huel a lot, and it has been a great addition to my diet, and has allowed me to eat so much more healthier without ever having to touch a salad, which is always a plus !
But to me, someone saying something is the future of food, I picture a person eating a nice juicy stake and then that being taken away from them and then put in its place, a bottle of Huel.
I understand Huel’s vision when they came up with that title. They were picturing a future where sustainability is important, and Huel fits that image perfectly. But to the normal joe on the street, they don’t care about that unfortunately, and they aren’t going to put down that McDonalds burger in favour of a bottle of Huel, it’s just not happening.
But Huel definitely has a place in the world for people who are trying to eat healthy and maybe don’t have the time to create from scratch healthy meals everyday, and many other scenarios.
Eating healthy is a conscious choice.
Just my 2pence
Excellently put
I just saw this on a repeat. I think DM was pretty mean and OTT, but I can see how some elements of the marketing (mostly stemming from approaching nutrition from a technological angle) cause certain reactions.
And the ‘space food’ angle was easy to link in with this. Thing is, some of the elements he was taking the piss out of are things done by Huel on purpose (I think under other circumstances, “looking like a packed lunch from NASA” is something the Huel marketing guy(s) might like the sound of).
The “cultishness” element has been commented on plenty, and while taking the piss out of the video was mean, I can see how he interpreted Huel as something that basically frees up time for people to work more. In that sense he only differs from Huel (and other "Soylent-like-product) users in seeing this as a bad thing.
I guess there might be a couple of things to be taken from the experience with DGMLIG in terms of tweaking the marketing. Huel seems an easy target for anyone wanting to take the piss out of 1960s depictions of future food coming in pill form.
Like many others, I became interested in Huel based on media coverage that was not entirely positive, so I’d hope this has not caused any damage to the business (working out effects of particular things on sales in the early years of a startup is difficult, I expect).
Also, Huel goes very well with Spray Tea.
I first found out about Huel from this episode.
I think the idea must’ve stayed with me. Many months later I’ve now decided to start taking my health a bit more seriously and from today I am now a Hueller. Free advertisement! I should’ve seen if Dave had a referral code…
There you go, “no such thing as bad publicity”.
… yeah, that’s not true at all but “In some instances bad publicity turns out to be good overall” is a very poor proverb.
Hello - sorry to resurect an old topic, but I just wanted to share something about this Dave Gorman episode which I thought was pretty funny.
In the episode, just as Dave is making fun of the customers, it cuts to a shot of the audience laughing at how weird and strange these people must be.
I happened to notice that one of the audience members was wearing an odd looking necklace. I paused the video, and realised that I recognised the audience member from another TV show I’d seen.
It wasn’t a necklace. It was a dog collar. Not like what a vicar would wear, but an actual dog collar:
The chap in the foreground, laughing away at Huel customers, is none other than Spot the dog. A man who literally spends his time (and an awful lot of money) to dress up and pretend to be a dog. He self-identifies as a dog.
Channel 4 made a documentary about him, you can see the trailer for it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rZ_sR3KS34
So basically, what I came here to say is that no matter how weird people might think we are for using Huel, there are definitely, definitely weirder people out there
I just thought it was funny that human-dog-boy would somehow try to look down his nose (snout?) at us. Made me chuckle, anyway.
He’s laughing there but, who knows, Spot might have gone home that day with a new lunchtime snack on his mind. However, if Spot does come across this I just want him to know (and this is v important Spot): Huel is not suitable for Doggos!
Maybe we should show Spot this thread.
