New volume discount plan - 8% price rise

I think part of the confusion is that the other threads talk about the US which includes ‘10% off when your order total is greater than $120 or an additional 15% off if your order total is above $400’ – there’s no mention of 15% off in the UK email, just 10%.

The change means that if you order more than 5 bags currently then it’s a price increase, no matter how you split up your order.

Not sure if this is allowed but here’s a spreadsheet I created to help me work out the increases for my subscription and whether it was possible to stop the price increase by splitting my orders. Includes Hot & Savoury, Complete & Powder 3.1.

So am I right in thinking it’s only cheaper than before if you order 4 or 5 bags and never order any more Huel ever again? If you order 4 or 5 bags per order but over the same period of time as someone who used to order 16 or more at a time, it’s still costing you more than it did previously?

Seems that way. The only way it is cheaper is to reduce the amount you use, so rather than buying 10 per month you can instead buy 5. This appears to be the only way to avoid the stealth price increase.

My subscription of Black (eight or nine bags) has gone up by something between 3% and 4%. Would that other stuff I buy had gone up by so little.

Now, about these dancing angels and the head of that pin…

Okay - but can we see a spreadsheet on, say, two of each of all those products? Say two black edition, two hot and savoury and two complete protein?

Because that’s (as Charlotte made clear) the main use case that benefits from this change, along with being how the vast majority of customers order Huel.

Nobody’s saying this isn’t a price rise for the minority of bulk buyers of a single product. That’s not the point of this. :man_shrugging:

It’s likely that the minority of bulk buyers of a single product is unnaturally large. Customers who would’ve otherwise bought a range of products have been incentivised by the previous discount system to buy just one. I know I have.

That maybe the case for some people but it isn’t for me. Over the years I have tried most of the products. I’ve tried every form factor and most flavours. I’ve settled on one flavour of powder and one flavour of bar as my core food products because they are my favourites and fit into how I want to use Huel and they are the products I want to buy. Making other products that I don’t want to buy cheaper is not going to make me buy those products.

No other brand offers bulk discounts. But they are more honest about their price increases. And at least most other companies have improved their formula - Huel seems to have made quality downgrades to cut costs, and limit price increases. With regard to quality it is no longer the market leader, but they have made it to keep the price increases relatively low, compared to other companies.

Do you have any recomendations? You can PM me…

@mbs, the most recent price increase from Huel was at the end of 2021. They were very honest, upfront and transparent about it.

This alteration of discount is a price decrease for many customers. It’s unreasonable to keep misrepresenting it.

I get that, for sure. But this isn’t about you.

Because of how the discount works if someone only ever ordered 2 of each they wouldn’t see a difference in price. If you wanted to have a months worth of Hot though you’d need 4 bags and you’d be paying more.

While it may be a price decrease for many customers it’s also a price increase too. Just compare the lowest cost per meal.

And while I agree that the last price increase was 2021, it’s not like they have kept things the same. They ‘improved’ Complete by taking out ingredients in order to keep costs down… only to increase them with this move.

End of the day, it’s not about the price increases - that’s life - it’s about the dishonest way of communicating. All they had to say was something like ‘due to supply constraint issues we’re taking the opportunity to increase prices for bulk buy purchases. By discouraging bulk buyers we’ll be able to better manage our stock and ensure that all Hueligans can blah blah…’

And I f it wasn’t a price increase then they could use tiered discount like they do for America, or even offer long-term Hueligans further discounts as part of their ‘loyalty scheme’. Changing to 15% or even 20% would keep prices largely the same for bulk orders. And if it was about the money… just say so.

It’s always about the money, that goes without saying.

Here it seems to be about changing to a system providing less discount for the minority so there can be more discount for the majority. As far as I can see it’s been announced and explained in exactly those terms. Honestly.

Can we stop with the righteous grandstanding that this is one in the eye for loyal customers? I’ve been a Hueligan for a long long time now and I’m getting a price decrease.

A bit rich for people to come on and moralise about dishonest communication and then completely mispresent the truth like this.

Thank you

I suspect it’s even worse than that - I honestly wonder whether some of this righteous indignation from “loyal Huel customers” might actually be something of an astroturfing campaign from competitors (or bots… :woman_shrugging:).

Or am I being too paranoid and cynical? :grimacing:

professional brand trolling (social media manipulation services) is sadly a very common practise these days.
