To lose one stone

Let’s start it up.
I went quiet as had a couple of deaths in my family so life was too hard to be thinking about weight and huel. I’m back on it now!!!

Last weight recorded in here for me was 13st 13.6 lbs back in June. Haven’t fluctuated a lot in lockdown - mostly maintained, but went as high 14st 4 lbs. This last two weeks I’ve started seeing real weight loss again.

Now 13st 10 lbs.

13st 4lbs.

Having a break from Huel (it’s aggravating my IBS at the moment) and weight loss is more consistent, if anything.

I feel able to post here now. As I’ve lost 1 stone and almost 2 lbs too. In about 8-9 weeks. Whilst I’ve lost weight before, this feels like something I might be able to keep up. I had headaches for the first day or so but they passed. I’m not running out of energy. Far from it in fact.

I’m a big guy but have always been capable of exercise as long as it isn’t high impact on joints etc. But I’ve basically been walking a lot as I can handle aches and pains and still walk, plus I’ve moved to a more pleasant semi rural ish spot 2 years ago, so I’m really appreciating the walks on a mental health and enjoyment angle. Sheep cows etc.

So I’m walking at least 10k steps a day, often more. Sometimes 20k. Good amount of levels too. This takes some hard work around work!

And my diet is:

Brekkie - Just less than 2 chocolate scoops, some flavouring and some milk (small levels, mainly water). Ice helps as does a blender. Sometime a coffee too. Usually after a long early walk.

Sometimes half a Huel bar for a snack

Lunch - Was same as brekkie but now discovered the hot Huel and am a real fan. I have just under 2 scoops in a steam type micro dish which makes it nice and soft. I usually do put some croutons or dried onion shavings in to help with flavour and psychologically for crunch issues which occasionally occur. I record all my calories with the MyFitnessPal app.

Sometimes half a Huel for a snack around 4

Dinner is varied. I’m trying to have a large salad with a few naughty bits involved like Feta and dressing. But good low calorie bits like silverskin onions and cous cous too. Sometimes it’s something not very healthy but I’m trying to avoid the likes of pizza apart from on weekends for treats.

Occasionally a Kit Kat or a few biscuits for a snack later.

I let myself have a bit more by way of treats if there are social occasions or otherwise on weekends. Usually only a few beers on a weekend.

Losing around 2-3 lbs per week. Because I’ve got something to look forward to for an evening meal I’m finding it ok. Especially as I quite like the brekkie and lunch with the little tricks I’ve mentioned I add above.

I really hope not continues. I started at 22 stone 5 and am 21 stone 3 and a quarter now. First target was 1.5 stone off before a wedding pre Xmas but think I can get close to 20 stone before then maybe. Will then aim for 18 and see how I feel about going for 16. Long way to go though.

Have to say though, big fan of Huel. Even when there are low weight loss weeks, I can console myself with the fact I’m being more healthy given what Huel contains. Not a crash diet. Saying that, is it an issue to have no fruit with my diet?

I’d say to weight loss keep sugar to a minimum. However instead of the Kit Kat replacing it with fruit and cacao nibs would be better long term solution and give you a sugar and chocolate hit!

First week of huel 1 pound gone so far. Couldn’t exercise as much this week (4 times vs 6) adjusting to this diet and my mood has been affected (cranky). Hope it’ll level out by week 2!

I tend to hit my basal rate with this diet. So I’m going to just keep on my exercise to bring down my calories to around 1.2K via exercise and see how it goes and my muscle development with all this easy to eat protein I’m getting!

  • Basal rate is too low to be sustainable, it’s the absolute minimum to keep your body going as if you were in a coma

  • 1200 calories is definitely too low

  • For each pound of weight you lose it is generally true that of that you are losing approximately 25% in muscle.

Interesting , it said my basal was 1750 on the app I used. I don’t think I can do much less than. That , realistically being an overweight 5ft3 young man that should be plenty surely. It seems like I get myself to around 1750 a day and at the moment it works out I exercise for a half an hour on huel , burn 500 calories so therefore I’m roughly down to 1.2K total

Deduct 500 from your sedentary number not your basal number.

1200 is (rule of thumb) the lowest a female should drop to.

1500 is (ish) the lowest a male should drop to.

It can feel counterintuitive but you don’t want to drop to such low calories that it becomes unsustainable over time. Bear in mind also that your numbers will lower gradually as you lose weight so how low do you get to after a month? It needs to be scalable and sustainable over time.

It’s all about a general lifestyle change, not just rushing towards a single goal.

Well done. Great effort with the weight loss and the exercise. Sounds like you found something that works for you and that you enjoy and can see continuing with which is brilliant.

I’m afraid that I was doing well but took a week off at the end of August (had family staying and a few social events and decided it would just be too difficult) and I never got back to it and have been avoiding the scales ever since. I need to get started again and your post is a bit of an inspiration to me.

I’m trying to walk every day. I used to walk three miles a day just travelling to work and back but now work from home so have to find time to do it rather than it just happening naturally.

Thanks. I’m worried about losing momentum too. Good luck.

Great to see others joining back in. 15 days since my last post, I’ve lost another couple of pounds (I’m 13st 2 lbs).

But… I’ve not been using Huel at all for two weeks and won’t be for at least another couple of weeks. Just eating healthily, low FODMAP, 1800 cals a day.

I’m down to just over 2 stone now. In just over 2 months. Loving the warm Huel for lunch.

Congrats for your success. Hope you also feel better.

Well done! I love how you’re taking it all in chunks. First a stone, then maybe another one and see how you get along. I think this is a great attitude and will encourage long term change, keep it up and thanks for sharing, please continue to!

My fitness pal says I’m low on iron. Is this likely?
