Lower Carb Huel / Keto

Cocoa powder, chocolate bars 85%, kefir, different nuts, spinach and peas, eggs, sardines, cheese, milk, cheese, butter, olive oil, coconut oil and some herbs and spices.

That is my main nutrition right now, not as complete as before

But at least it is vegetarian.

Is it more important for you to be on a “healthy” diet or to have mainly convenient foods in the form of meal replacement powders? If convenience is more important there are special keto meal replacements, for example the product recommended by rikefrejut, but also products from companies like ambronite or ample. These are more expensive than Huel, though.

But depending on the maximum amount of carbs that you “allow” yourself a small amount of Huel Black Edition would still be possible. What is your carb limit?

I am just trying but now zero carbs.

I dont know if i coud be on keto even if I add fat to Huel Black like they say

Having Huel before as a 30-40% was a healthy diet for me… I dont know why you say the opposite

Huel is healthy, sure; if a healthy diet is important to you it is a good choice. If your primary concern is convenience there are also other options, for example various keto meal replacements or protein powders.

Do you limit your carb intake because you think it is healthier or for weight loss? The latter seems to be the most frequent motivation. Or are there other benefits? You said that your focus was better - do you think a keto diet improves cognitive functions?

Just to impove myself, I am on my perfect weight right now.

I feel very good, with a lot of energy but the food restriction is a pain in the ass… I am thinking about being keto on the week days and eating carb on the friday and saturday

Perhaps Huel offers a keto product in the future - as there seems to be enough demand for it. I know lots of people who believe in low-carb.

As far as I know there seem to be differences in low-carb diets, though. Everybody defines a different upper limit. For ketosis I think the cutoff is 5g per day, but there are also other, less strict strategies where people have a higher amount of carbs. Perhaps you just need to find the right cutoff value for you, and maybe this does not even have to be as low as just 5g carbs daily.

If you are craving sweet flavours it may help to use artificial sweeteners or flavour drops - they are sucralose based and calorie free.

The general cutoff is 50g of carbs a day but this varies between individuals. You might find our article on ketogenic diets interesting.

I still pop in from time to time, but since I was requested to not discuss our products and am not personally a Huel user as it didn’t work for me, there’s not many topics I can have much of an input in unfortunately.

50g is the absolute highest threshold I’ve ever seen recommended. Far more common are 30g (low enough for most) and 20g (low enough for basically all). 50g, while low enough for many, is far too high to induce ketosis in a lot of people and thus is a poor recommendation.

Edit: one note about your linked keto guide by the way: it references high protein intakes suppressing ketosis due to amino acids having the potential to convert to glucose. While this conversion is real, there’s a decent body of evidence to suggest this process of gluconeogenesis is demand-driven, not supply-driven, so even fairly high protein intakes of ~200+g per day are unlikely to have much of an impact.

Hello @Dan_Huel I will try soo Black Huel and see if it works in my keto diet with the tricks you shared in the article. I really need some food support like Huel in my Keto journey.

But I feel that Huel is a missed opportunity of making it more keto friendly. I know that it wasnt the intention creating the product, but it would have been great, even for people that werent on keto.

A macro distribution like this would have been incredible and it could become the central point of an entire keto diet, making some little adjustments.

PS. Also I have noticed that Black UU is more keto friendly with less carbs than the rest of Black flavours, which makes it the choice to go with no doubt. I like that. Do you have the macro distribution of Black UU? Seems different than 17:40:40:3

Keto is not a mainstream diet though. Keto requires far more knowledge, understanding and (importantly) discipline of what you are doing and what you are eating. Huel is a mainstream product with mainstream advertising and placement (ie, now in UK supermarkets). It’s design and purpose is seamless integration with an existing diet so you can have 1 meal a week or 2 meals a day, it’s upto you. You can’t operate a keto product like that.

A company has to know what its market is otherwise it confuses its customers by having too many products which would end up conflicting against each other.

Keto is best serviced by a Keto specialist company.

Yeap it’s why I said it’s why said general cutoff. People new to keto will likely need a lower amount, it’s not a recommendation because I wouldn’t recommend a diet to anyone without a detailed history and background,

Yes I agree, but I’d argue it’s still not entirely clear. Therefore if you want to err on the side of caution for a lower carb intake the same should be done for a lower protein intake. Everything can be made more flexbile by testing blood ketones.

Good luck!

I’m not sure I agree with this. A super high fat intake doesn’t confer any benefits (that I’m aware of). It’s a bit too niche at the moment and requires an all or nothing approach. I’m not sure how we’d communicate to consumers that “Huel Keto” is best used as part of a ketogenic diet especially when a lot of people (you and Joe not included) don’t follow a keto diet when they think they are.

Good question! It’s roughly 14:41:41:4.

I would add that macro distribution to the Black UU page. Its much more attractive for keto users than the flavoured ones. 14. 41.41.4 is on the verge to be keto friendly.

Right now on keto I feel great, much more energy, sustained energy, more focus, much less hunger, I am doing 1 big meal per day but because my body doesnt need more, not because I am forcing me to do so.

The problem again is the restrictions of foods…

After christmas I will ask for blood tests to check if everything is ok, specially cholesterol.

I did hard cardio today skating 30-40 mins, it feels like I cant make super sprints rollerblading but the energy is very sustainable all the time. For example, I didnt arrive at home suffocating like I normally do.

It seems to be that low-carb and keto are not exactly the same. Maybe it helps to do just low-carb without going into ketosis, then the allowed carb threshold would be much higher. You could try it out and see how you feel then. It may take some experimentation to know what upper carb limit is right for you.

And I agree that at least for low-carb there should be a market, as this kind of diet seems to be very popular, especially among people who want to lose weight. To increase the percentage of fats you could add omega-3 fatty acids, something that is known for its benefitial effects especially regarding cardiovascular health.

Yes, so far I am liking it a lot. It seems like I am in another kind of body, more efficient, more energy, no problems, no hunger, no need for snacking everything is smooth…

This saturday-sunday I will break the ketosis and see what is like to be like before with a normal diet

What is your upper carb limit right now?

Mmm as low as possible. Main carbs have been from nuts or dark chocolate 85%

Some people use keto sticks to determine the maximum amount they can have and still be in ketosis. After a while it seems that they can have an increasing amount of carbs without changing their metabolism.

I have them, pretty useful. Tonight or tomorrow I will break ketosis with my previous diet. I will update with results.

I want to break ketosis with Huel White or Tortilla de patatas

I broke today my keto diet, and my energy levels are totally crushed. I will keep this old diet to experiment until the end of christmas and then I will go keto again.

I broke the keto with 500kcal of Huel and then traditional spanish food like beans, tortilla de patatas and morcilla

I feel like shit, my body needs a nap
