I am not wealthy sadly, I survive on my wages but that’s about it and most of mine goes on rent. As the saying goes, I work to live not live to work.
I find it bizarre when Europeans talk about British standards of living being higher then the rest of the EU. Compared to many other countries Britain is a dystopian shit hole. Only a very small percentage live in the way you would imagine, for the rest of us. We work, pay rent, eat, drink tea and sleep.

@Berserker The UK is the 4th richest in the EU by net income, 7th richest if we take PPP into account and you find it bizarre that British living standards are among the best out of 28 member states ?
You literally didn’t know that the EU includes more than 12 countries? 
I work as a data analyst, seeing the bigger picture is my job. I base my statements on statistics not the subjective opinion of single individuals.

This country is filthy rich. We raided the rest of the world for centuries. We have billionaires growing on trees. Just because you and I don’t see any of it, doesn’t mean it isn’t here.
It’s a pretty neat trick that “we” are in massive debt but the country is full of cash.

If you’d know how lucky you are to grow up in a country like the UK and you’d know how poor practically everyone else are then you’d value your life a lot more. It definitely happened to me, knowing how the majority of the world lives in a way not even comparable to me, a Northern-European, that gives you a whole new perspective.
Statistics really don’t show the reality for a lot of people living in the UK. It’s just numbers,
Sure, the poverty is nowhere near shanty town poor, or Ethiopian in the 80s poor, but there are literally hundreds of thousands of people going without the very basics (food, warm clothing, gas, electric, a bed to sleep in) on a daily basis.
The outside view of the UK and the reality of what it can be like to live here for some people, is drastically different.
It’s not everyone. There are huge gaps. Plenty people live a perfectly adequate life: not rich, but fine, and just about have everything they need (me included and I feel very fortunate). Lots of people have fairly comfortable lives, some are affluent, and some are ridiculously wealthy.
There really are an unacceptable number of people living in real desperate poverty though. I see it every day, and it’s very sad
